Chapter 7 - VANESSA HAD CALLED EMILY BEFORE SHE DISAPPEARED

Emily saved the call.
She recorded it because California law complicated recordings, but Vanessa had left most of it as a voicemail after Emily stopped answering.
Vanessa sounded calm.
Almost kind.
Emily, I think you deserve the truth about Jake.
Then:
He isn’t happy.
Then:
He feels trapped.
Then:
You have the babies now. Maybe that should be enough.
I closed my eyes.
Babies.
Plural.
Vanessa knew.
Later in the message:
Sometimes relationships end before people admit it.
And finally:
Don’t make the financial side ugly. Richard will take care of you.
That sentence changed the entire meaning.
Vanessa was not simply trying to steal a married man.
She was preparing Emily to accept a financial settlement.
One that likely required signing away Harbor rights.
Emily said:
“I think they expected me to leave you.”
I looked up.
“They wanted the divorce?”
“Maybe.”
Patricia nodded.
“If Emily initiated separation emotionally, Vanessa could step in while Richard pushed a property settlement.”
A marriage collapsed.
Assets reorganized.
Harbor land signed away.
Vanessa positioned near me.
My mother’s shares potentially brought under the Cole-Mercer structure.
Everything fit.
Except they miscalculated one thing.
Emily did not leave broken.
She left organized.
“That’s why you took the nursery,” I said.
She looked at me.
“I took what I bought.”
“I know.”
“You sound surprised.”
“I’m not.”
I almost smiled.
Wrong moment.
Then Emily asked:
“Did you love her?”
Vanessa.
The question I feared more than criminal investigators.
“I thought I did.”
Emily’s eyes moved away.
“That’s not an answer.”
“No.”
I breathed.
“I loved how she made me feel important.”
Emily looked back.
“That’s still not love.”
“I know.”
She flinched at those words.
I corrected myself.
“I’m learning.”
Better.
Then Patricia’s assistant entered.
Federal investigators had located Vanessa.
Not Vancouver.
San Diego.
She had used a secondary ID and returned across the border.
My father remained in Canada.
Vanessa was arrested on charges related to identity fraud and financial conspiracy.
During questioning, she requested immunity.
In exchange:
Documents.
Emails.
Recordings.
She claimed Richard Mercer was the mastermind.
Nathan Cole helped build the shell companies.
She participated.
But she insisted one thing:
“Jake was never supposed to know.”
That sounded almost protective.
It wasn’t.
It was contempt.
They considered me useful enough to manipulate and too weak to include.
Then Vanessa gave investigators a hard drive.
Inside was a folder labeled ELEANOR.
My mother.
The files included audio recordings made during the final months of her life.
One recording contained my mother’s voice.
Weak.
But clear.
She said:
Richard, if you bring Nathan Cole into my company again, I’ll give my shares to Emily Bennett.
Emily and I stared at each other.
My mother knew Emily.
May you like
Before we ever met.
The recording was dated seven years before our first date.
