Chapter 5 - MY FATHER HAD BUILT A TRUST FOR A CHILD HE COULDN'T CONTROL

The Harper Mercer Trust had been created four months earlier.

I had never seen it.

Emily had never approved it.

Yet our daughter’s full expected name appeared on every page.

Harper Eleanor Mercer.

My mother’s name as the middle name.

Only Emily and I had chosen that.

We told my father at Thanksgiving.

Vanessa knew two days later because I told her.

I hated myself for remembering.

The trust documents claimed Harper would receive shares in Mercer Urban upon birth.

On the surface, generous.

Underneath, dangerous.

The shares were tied to debt guarantees.

If the Harbor project collapsed, Harper’s trust could absorb losses.

My father had positioned an unborn child as a financial shield.

Patricia spoke carefully.

“Emily wants every document preserved.”

“She’ll get everything.”

“She doesn’t want promises from you.”

That hurt because it should.

“What does she want?”

“Distance.”

I closed my eyes.

“Can I know if Harper is okay?”

Patricia paused.

“Yes.”

One kindness.

“Emily had a prenatal appointment this morning. The baby is healthy.”

I nearly cried.

“Thank you.”

Then Patricia said:

“Do not interpret that as access.”

“I won’t.”

For once, I meant it.

I began cooperating.

All emails.

Passwords.

Phones.

Accounts.

Everything.

Detective Park asked about my father’s Vancouver contacts.

One name stood out.

Nathan Cole.

Vanessa’s father.

I had met him twice.

Retired investment banker.

Charming.

Quiet.

Supposedly living in Seattle.

He wasn’t.

Nathan controlled a Vancouver private-equity firm that had funded North Coast Infrastructure.

Vanessa and my father were connected financially through her father.

Not recently.

For twelve years.

Long before our affair.

Long before I married Emily.

That made Vanessa’s reappearance in my life less accidental.

We had dated briefly in college.

She contacted me again nine months ago after a conference.

At the time, it felt nostalgic.

Now it looked strategic.

Police recovered deleted texts from my cloud backup.

Vanessa to me:

You deserve someone who understands the pressure.

Vanessa:

Emily seems sweet, but does she really understand what you’re building?

Vanessa:

You can’t spend your life apologizing for ambition.

She had spent months feeding exactly the version of myself I wanted to believe.

Then Miles found something in archived board correspondence.

Seven years earlier, after my mother died, Nathan Cole offered to buy her forty-nine-percent stake.

My father refused.

Instead, they created a joint structure using Vanessa as future trustee.

Why?

Because my mother’s will contained a restriction.

Her shares could not be sold outside the family.

But they could pass through a marital line.

I stared.

“What marital line?”

Miles looked uncomfortable.

“If Vanessa married you, she could potentially become beneficiary through a restructuring.”

My chest went cold.

Vanessa had not merely returned because she wanted me.

Her father and mine had once planned for us to marry.

Emily changed that.

I married the wrong woman for their strategy.

Then Detective Park uncovered an old email from my father to Nathan Cole.

Subject:

JAKE WILL COME AROUND.

Body:

HE ALWAYS CONFUSES BEING DESIRED WITH BEING LOVED.

I read the sentence twice.

My father had understood my weakest trait years before I did.

And Vanessa had used it perfectly.
