Chapter 5 - THE MAN MARCUS PROTECTED

Marcus sat in the basement archive room for a long time.
Then said:
“My brother.”
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
“Caleb.”
Marcus Hale had one younger brother.
Caleb Hale.
Chief executive of Blackwell Workforce Solutions.
The division supplying temporary labor to warehouses, hotels, hospitals, and private households.
Adrian trusted Marcus with half the empire.
Marcus trusted Caleb with the people inside it.
Rachel opened employee deduction records.
Harbor Employee Benefits was heavily concentrated in Caleb’s divisions.
Domestic Services.
Warehouse staffing.
Night cleaning.
Exactly.
Marcus whispered:
“Daniel found Caleb taking money.”
“How much?”
“At first? Maybe two hundred thousand.”
Adrian stared.
“At first.”
Marcus explained.
Caleb had gambling debt.
Then a failed investment.
He created small payroll deductions.
Tiny.
Five dollars.
Twelve.
Twenty.
Workers rarely noticed.
Then he realized low-income employees often assumed confusing deductions were normal.
He expanded.
Built Harbor into the pipeline after Evelyn died.
“Why protect him?”
Marcus looked ashamed.
“Because he was my brother.”
Wrong answer.
Honest answer.
Adrian’s anger sharpened.
“You let workers starve for your brother.”
“I didn’t know how far it went.”
“You knew enough.”
“Yes.”
June stood very still.
“How long?”
Marcus looked at her.
“Three years.”
She laughed once.
“My children lived with my mother because I couldn’t afford Chicago.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“You know it now.”
That landed harder.
Then Adrian asked:
“Daniel?”
Marcus swallowed.
“Daniel found Caleb.”
“What happened the night he died?”
“I don’t know.”
“Do not lie.”
“I’m not.”
Marcus said he confronted Caleb after Evelyn and Daniel showed him the evidence.
Caleb denied everything.
Marcus believed enough to remove him from payroll access temporarily.
Then Daniel died that night.
Caleb claimed coincidence.
Evelyn wanted police investigation.
Adrian had been in London negotiating a merger.
Why had Evelyn never told him?
Because she planned to.
Then she died eighteen months later from cancer.
By then, Marcus had convinced her Daniel’s crash was accidental and Caleb had stopped.
Had he?
No.
Caleb simply redesigned the theft.
Marcus discovered it again after Evelyn’s death.
Instead of exposing him, he ordered repayments quietly.
Caleb promised.
Then kept stealing.
“You covered him twice.”
Adrian’s voice was almost a whisper.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because if Caleb went down, Blackwell Workforce would collapse.”
Adrian stared.
“No.”
Marcus looked up.
“You feared scandal.”
“Yes.”
There it was.
Not brotherhood anymore.
Empire.
Marcus protected the company.
And by doing so, corrupted it further.
Then Rachel opened Daniel’s crash-related notes.
He had written one license plate number the day before he died.
Illinois registration.
Vehicle owner at that time:
Blackwell Workforce Solutions.
Assigned driver:
Caleb Hale.
June stopped breathing.
“My husband’s crash.”
No proof yet.
But Caleb’s company vehicle had been near Daniel’s route.
Then another document fell from the box.
Printed email.
Daniel to Evelyn:
If Caleb learns I copied the payroll source code, I think he’ll come after me.
I’m moving the backup tonight.
June’s hands began shaking.
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“Where is your brother?”
May you like
Marcus whispered:
“On his way to Mexico.”
