Chapter 4 - THE CODE IN THE BRACELET

The numbers were not a bank account.
Not a date.
Not a password.
At least not obviously.
6-14-27-9.
June stared at them.
“I’ve worn this every day for four years.”
“You never knew?”
“Daniel told me the bracelet was for Lila and Micah.”
Maybe it was.
And maybe he hid the only thing he could safely leave inside it.
Rachel tried internal system references.
Nothing.
Adrian searched Evelyn’s personal files.
Then June said:
“Books.”
Everyone looked at her.
“Daniel loved puzzle books.”
“What kind?”
“Index codes. Page-line-word.”
Adrian turned toward Evelyn’s old office.
He had not touched it since she died.
Door remained closed.
Not locked.
Emotionally sealed.
Inside, everything was still arranged the way she left it.
Books.
Photographs.
Yellow ceramic mug.
One paperback lay beside the desk.
The Count of Monte Cristo.
Evelyn’s favorite.
Page 6?
Line 14?
Word 27?
No.
The numbers exceeded line structure.
Then June remembered Daniel’s habit.
Four-number code:
Shelf-book-page-word.
Sixth shelf.
Fourteenth book.
Page twenty-seven.
Ninth word.
They counted.
A corporate compliance manual.
Of course.
Page twenty-seven.
Ninth word:
BASEMENT.
Adrian looked toward Marcus.
Marcus’s expression changed.
The Blackwell headquarters had three basement levels.
Archived physical payroll records stored on B2.
Then Marcus said:
“Daniel used to maintain offline backups.”
Rachel looked at him.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“He had a storage cage.”
Adrian’s voice sharpened.
“Still exists?”
“I don’t know.”
They went to headquarters at nine.
June came too.
Not because Adrian ordered it.
Because she chose.
B2 contained rows of locked cages.
Daniel’s old ID:
C-17.
Storage inventory showed it was cleared after his death.
By:
Marcus Hale.
Adrian stared at him.
“You cleared it.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“What did you remove?”
“Nothing.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I found it empty.”
Then June noticed dust.
The cage had an old steel cabinet bolted to the floor.
Inventory said nothing about it.
Key missing.
Facilities opened it.
Inside:
One cardboard box.
Daniel’s handwriting.
JUNE — IF THEY LIED TO YOU.
Her knees nearly gave out.
Adrian caught the box, not her.
He had learned.
June opened it herself.
Inside were payroll reports.
Hundreds.
Handwritten notes.
USB drives.
And one photograph.
Evelyn Blackwell sitting across from Daniel Carter at a coffee shop.
Date:
Two weeks before Daniel’s death.
So Evelyn met him before the planned Thursday meeting.
They had already been working together.
Then a second photograph.
Marcus Hale walking into the same coffee shop twenty minutes later.
June looked at him.
“You were there.”
Marcus went still.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He stared at the floor.
“Because Evelyn called me.”
Adrian’s voice hardened.
“And what happened?”
Marcus looked at him.
“She told me someone inside Blackwell was stealing from workers.”
“Who?”
“She didn’t know.”
Then June opened Daniel’s handwritten notebook.
One sentence boxed in red:
M.H. is not the thief.
Everyone froze.
Marcus exhaled.
Adrian did not relax.
May you like
Because the next sentence read:
But M.H. is protecting him.
