Chapter 13 - THE VIDEO THAT CLEARED HER NAME

Maeve Carter had spent eight months being called a thief.

A liar.

An incompetent nurse.

Now she was watching security footage that proved she'd been telling the truth from the beginning.

The recording showed Julian Hayes lying in his hospital bed.

His vital signs appeared stable.

A nurse entered.

Then Dr. Adrian Vance.

Maeve leaned closer.

"That's him."

Roman's jaw tightened.

Dr. Vance approached the medication station.

He entered something into the computer.

Then handed a prepared medication to another staff member.

Maeve's stomach turned.

She recognized the sequence.

The authorization had been placed under her credentials.

But she wasn't in the room.

She was on a different floor.

The video continued.

Julian's condition deteriorated shortly afterward.

Medical staff rushed to the bedside.

The recording ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Maeve whispered:

"He did it."

Roman remained still.

The investigator explained that the footage, medication records, expert findings, and witness statements would be reviewed together to establish criminal responsibility.

Roman nodded.

He wanted certainty.

Not another story built on assumptions.

The investigation ultimately established that Dr. Vance had intentionally manipulated Julian's treatment to silence him.

Victor Bellamy had helped arrange the attack that brought Julian to the hospital.

Claire Wexler had assisted with falsifying records and concealing the patient transfer scheme.

The conspiracy had stretched across businesses, medical facilities, and charitable organizations.

Several people were charged.

Others cooperated.

And the truth finally began reaching the families who'd spent years searching for missing relatives.

For Maeve, the most emotional moment came during a formal hearing reviewing her professional record.

Her attorney presented the evidence.

Independent experts testified.

The hospital acknowledged serious failures in its investigation.

The false findings were withdrawn.

And Maeve's nursing license was fully restored.

When the hearing ended, Maeve sat quietly.

Her hands trembled.

She remembered the day Dr. Vance looked her in the eye and said:

"The evidence is overwhelming."

Now she understood.

The evidence had never been overwhelming.

It had been manufactured.

She stepped outside.

Roman waited near the courthouse entrance.

He wore a simple dark coat.

No entourage.

No intimidating display.

Just Roman.

"How did it go?" he asked.

Maeve smiled through tears.

"They cleared my name."

Roman closed his eyes.

"Good."

She laughed.

"That's all you have to say?"

He smiled.

"What would you like me to say?"

She stepped closer.

"Maybe congratulations?"

He laughed softly.

"Congratulations, Nurse Carter."

The words struck her.

Nurse Carter.

Not waitress.

Not disgraced employee.

Not accused thief.

Nurse Carter.

She began crying.

Roman opened his arms.

She stepped into them.

For several seconds, they held each other.

Then Maeve whispered:

"Thank you."

Roman shook his head.

"You did the hard part."

She looked up.

"Roman, you helped."

He smiled sadly.

"Julian would have wanted me to."

Maeve studied him.

Then asked:

"What happens now?"

He looked toward the courthouse.

"I continue cooperating with the investigation. I fulfill whatever legal obligations come from my past."

"And after that?"

Roman looked at her.

"I don't know."

For the first time, Maeve saw uncertainty in the man who once seemed to control everything.

She smiled gently.

"Maybe that's okay."

Roman looked at her.

"Maybe."

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from Detective Mitchell.

Roman opened it.

His expression changed.

"What's wrong?" Maeve asked.

He looked toward her.

"It's Lily."

Maeve's heart tightened.

"Is she okay?"

"Yes."

Roman swallowed.

"But she asked to speak with me."

Maeve smiled.

"That's wonderful."

He nodded.

Then continued.

"There's something she wants to know."

"What?"

Roman looked down.

The message from the detective contained Lily's question.

A simple sentence.

May you like

But one that made the most feared man in the city struggle to breathe.

"Can Uncle Roman promise he won't disappear like Daddy did?"
