Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO DIE

Roman Hayes had spent eighteen years believing his brother survived a terrible accident.
Now Maeve's father was telling him the crash had been arranged to kill Roman himself.
He sat beside Daniel Carter's hospital bed.
For the first time in years, he didn't look intimidating.
He looked confused.
"Mr. Carter," Roman said quietly, "why would someone target me eighteen years ago?"
Daniel's voice was weak.
"You were supposed to be on that bus."
Roman frowned.
"I don't remember."
Daniel nodded.
"Your father arranged transportation for several family members that morning."
A memory surfaced.
Roman had been twenty-four.
He was supposed to accompany Julian to a business meeting near the river.
At the last minute, his father changed the plan.
Roman took another vehicle.
Julian boarded the bus.
Roman's chest tightened.
"Victor knew my schedule."
Daniel nodded.
"He was waiting near the intersection."
Maeve looked at Roman.
The past was beginning to connect.
Victor Bellamy had been part of a criminal network for nearly two decades.
He'd targeted Roman.
Julian survived.
Then Julian grew older and discovered the truth.
And Victor arranged another attack.
This time, Julian didn't survive.
Roman lowered his head.
For years, he'd believed his power protected his family.
Now he understood how much danger that power had attracted.
Daniel continued.
"I reported what I saw."
Maeve squeezed his hand.
"What happened?"
"The case disappeared."
Roman's expression darkened.
Daniel looked at him.
"Someone told me never to speak about it again."
"Who?"
Daniel hesitated.
"A man from your father's organization."
Roman swallowed.
He knew what that meant.
His family had buried the truth.
Perhaps to protect its reputation.
Perhaps to avoid exposing its own crimes.
Or perhaps because powerful men cared more about control than justice.
Roman looked toward Maeve.
She was watching him carefully.
He understood the question in her eyes.
Would he do the same?
Would he hide the truth?
Or finally face it?
Roman turned toward Daniel.
"Mr. Carter, I can't undo what happened."
His voice broke.
"But I can help make sure the truth comes out now."
Daniel studied him.
Then nodded.
"That's what Julian wanted."
Roman closed his eyes.
His brother.
The man he'd dismissed as naive.
The man who had risked everything to expose crimes Roman refused to see.
Roman felt ashamed.
But for the first time, shame became something useful.
It pushed him toward change.
Over the following months, Roman cooperated with investigators.
He provided financial records.
Identified compromised businesses.
Disclosed his own involvement in illegal activities.
And accepted legal scrutiny.
Several former associates opposed him.
Others threatened him.
His business empire shrank dramatically.
But Roman refused to continue building his life on fear.
Meanwhile, Maeve's nursing board review reopened.
Independent experts examined the altered medication records.
The forged access logs.
The fabricated narcotics accusations.
And the evidence connected to Dr. Vance.
The findings supported Maeve's claim that she'd been framed.
Her attorney submitted the full record.
Then, one afternoon, Maeve received a letter.
She opened it with trembling hands.
Roman sat opposite her.
"What does it say?"
She read silently.
Then tears began streaming down her face.
Roman stood.
"Maeve?"
She looked up.
Her voice broke.
"My license."
He waited.
"It's been reinstated."
Roman smiled.
For the first time, she saw pure happiness on his face.
No calculation.
No suspicion.
Just joy.
"Maeve..."
She began laughing through tears.
"I'm a nurse again."
Roman pulled her into a gentle embrace.
She held him tightly.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Vincent entered.
His expression was serious.
"Roman, we have news."
Roman turned.
"What?"
"Victor Bellamy has been located."
Roman's smile faded.
"Where?"
"At a private airport."
"Is he in custody?"
Vincent nodded.
"Yes."
Maeve exhaled.
The nightmare was finally ending.
But Vincent wasn't finished.
"Victor has agreed to cooperate."
Roman frowned.
"Why?"
"Because the investigators recovered something he thought had been destroyed."
Roman's chest tightened.
"What?"
Vincent looked toward Maeve.
"A video recording from Julian's final night."
The room went silent.

Then Vincent added:
"It shows Dr. Vance entering Julian's room after Maeve was removed from the case. And it shows exactly who gave the fatal medication."
