Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Reckoning

Six months later, the high-profile criminal trial of State of Minnesota v. Amber Vance-Morrison and Julian Vance convened at the Hennepin County Government Center.
The trial was covered extensively by national news organizations. The mountain of digital evidence—4K bank surveillance footage, forensic toxicology reports, dark-web chemical purchase receipts, and certified banking audits—left the defense team completely helpless.
Inside the crowded courtroom, Amber and Julian sat at the defense table.
They looked completely unrecognizable. Dressed in blue state prison jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles bound by heavy steel chains, they sat three feet apart, refusing to look at each other, their unholy alliance completely destroyed by months of mutual betrayal in custody.
I sat in the front row of the gallery alongside Derek, Rachel, and Thomas Brennan. Derek wore a sharp navy suit, his posture erect, his face radiant with health, clarity, and unshakeable peace.
Judge Katherine Mercer slammed her heavy wooden gavel down, restoring absolute silence to the gallery.
“We are gathered today for sentencing,” Judge Mercer declared sternly, reviewing the probation reports before her. “Over the course of this trial, this court has witnessed an appalling display of calculated human wickedness, sociopathic greed, and physical torture inflicted upon a husband and father by those who were bound by law to love him.”
She fixed her razor-sharp gaze onto Amber Vance-Morrison first.
“Amber Vance-Morrison,” Judge Mercer announced, her voice echoing authoritatively off the high marble walls. “You entered a family under the guise of love, only to systematically poison your husband, forge his identity, and attempt to rob your own minor children of their future for your vanity. I sentence you to twenty-four years in state prison, without the possibility of parole for eighteen years.”
Amber let out a sharp, hysterical shriek, collapsing forward against the table as court marshals held her down.
Judge Mercer then turned her cold, uncompromising gaze onto Julian Vance.
“Julian Vance,” the judge continued. “For your leadership role in RICO Racketeering, Bank Fraud, Identity Theft, and Conspiracy, I sentence you to twenty-two years in state prison.”
The heavy wooden gavel struck the block with a thunderous CRACK.
Court officers immediately stepped forward, grabbing the chains attached to Amber and Julian, marching them out through the side doors toward the holding cells.

As Amber was dragged away, she turned her head toward our row one last time, looking at Derek through a blur of frantic tears, her lips moving silently to form the word Forgive me.
Derek sat tall in his chair. He didn't turn away. He met her gaze with total, serene, and absolute silence—the final, quiet goodbye to a ghost who no longer held any power over his soul.
