Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Syndicate

Within forty-eight hours of the bank arrests, the news of the "Vance Financial Syndicate" exploded across regional and national media outlets.
THE MINNEAPOLIS STAR TRIBUNE published a front-page headline:
“PROMINENT SOCIALITE AND BROTHER ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR BANK FRAUD AND POISONING SCHEME TARGETING FORMER CFO’S FAMILY.”
The fallout was swift, brutal, and absolute.
Federal and state investigators executed sweeping search warrants on Julian Vance’s commercial offices downtown, uncovering an international network of predatory land deals, offshore money laundering, and illegal credit abstraction schemes totaling over $14 million.
Julian’s luxury vehicles were repossessed, his bank accounts frozen under federal asset-forfeiture warrants, and his commercial licenses revoked permanently.
Meanwhile, inside my estate in Wayzata, a very different kind of work was taking place.
Derek had moved back into his childhood bedroom alongside six-year-old Lucas and four-year-old Sophie. The house, which had been silent for years, was once again filled with the innocent laughter of children playing in the sunlit garden.
Under Dr. Thorne’s guidance, Derek underwent a two-week intensive outpatient detoxification protocol. As the synthetic sedatives slowly cleared from his cellular system, the fog lifted from his mind. His natural energy returned, his eyes grew clear and sharp, and for the first time in six years, he looked like the brilliant, confident man I had raised.
On Friday afternoon, Thomas Brennan walked into my study carrying a thick blue legal folder.
“Sylvia,” Thomas said, taking a seat across from my desk. “The Family Court has acted with unprecedented speed.”
“What is the ruling, Thomas?” I asked.
Thomas opened the file, revealing a certified document bearing the gold seal of the State Superior Court.
“Judge Katherine Mercer has issued an Emergency Summary Decree,” Thomas reported with a broad smile. “Amber Vance-Morrison’s parental rights have been suspended unconditionally. Full, exclusive legal and physical custody of Lucas and Sophie has been granted to Derek.”
I let out a long, quiet breath of relief. “And the financial liabilities?”
“Because the secondary mortgage on Willow Creek Lane was proven to be a forged instrument executed via bank fraud,” Thomas explained, “the Chancery Court has declared the mortgage null and void ab initio. The lender has been forced to erase the $1.2 million lien from Derek’s credit record completely.”
“And the house itself?”
“The house is being put up for sale next week,” Thomas said. “Derek has decided he wants a fresh start. He’s moving into a quiet four-bedroom home three blocks from your estate.”
I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the garden, where Derek was helping Lucas build a wooden birdhouse while Rachel played with little Sophie near the rose bushes.

The parasites had tried to bleed my family dry. They had used poison, lies, and forged signatures to tear us apart.
Instead, they had only succeeded in forging an unbreakable bond of unity, strength, and love.
