Chapter 11 - HIS MOTHER HAD TOLD HIM TO “REMIND ME I WAS LUCKY”

Carol cried before she finished the story.

Two nights before the party, Julian complained that I was becoming “too independent.”

Promotion.

Separate friends.

More confidence at work.

I had started wearing nice clothes again because my son finally slept through the night.

Ironically, I was beginning to recover.

Julian noticed.

And apparently that scared him.

Carol’s advice:

“Remind her marriage isn’t guaranteed. Women get too comfortable when they think a man won’t leave.”

I stared at her.

“You told him to make me insecure.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her answer was painfully simple.

“That’s what my mother told me.”

Generational cruelty disguised as marital wisdom.

Carol had spent forty years worrying her husband would find someone younger.

She believed fear kept wives attentive.

So when Julian complained that I no longer seemed desperate for his approval, she gave him the same poison.

Then the pool party happened.

Selina became the weapon.

I asked:

“Did you know about the house collateral plan?”

“No.”

“I believe you.”

“Did you know about Mercer Strategic income?”

“No.”

“I believe that too.”

She looked confused.

“You don’t hate me?”

“I don’t trust you.”

That was different.

She nodded.

Fair.

Then Carol handed me her phone.

One message from Julian after the party:

I THINK I WENT TOO FAR.

Carol replied:

SHE’LL GET OVER IT.

Another:

Julian:

SHE TOOK THE MIC.

Carol:

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

I almost laughed.

That microphone had apparently terrified the entire family.

Then I found one more message.

Sent the morning of the party.

Julian:

IF SHE GETS ANGRY ENOUGH, MAYBE SHE’LL FINALLY QUIT THAT JOB.

My stomach tightened.

I had thought Julian resented my job because it reminded him of his unemployment.

Wrong.

He wanted me to quit before the lake financing.

Why?

My salary qualified us for the home-equity capacity the lender wanted.

But if I left after signing the financing, Julian believed I would become financially dependent again.

May you like

The humiliation was not just meant to make me insecure enough to sign.

He hoped I would eventually leave the career that had made it possible for me to say no.
