Chapter 1 - THE SECRET BEHIND HIS “JOB LOSS”

“This dark secret… I’ve kept hidden for far too long.”

The backyard became completely silent.

My name is Claire Mercer, and for twelve years I had protected Julian from consequences he should have faced himself.

Julian stopped beside the pool.

“Claire. Put the microphone down.”

I smiled.

“No.”

His brother Ethan looked nervous now.

Good.

I turned toward the fifty people gathered around us.

“For the last two years, most of you have believed Julian lost his executive position because his company restructured.”

Several relatives nodded.

Julian’s mother, Carol, whispered:

“Claire, don’t.”

I continued.

“That isn’t what happened.”

Julian’s face drained.

“He was terminated.”

The silence deepened.

“Claire!”

“For submitting false expense claims and approving payments to a vendor that did not provide the services it billed.”

Someone near the bar gasped.

Several of Julian’s former colleagues were at the party.

One looked down immediately.

The vendor was called Mercer Strategic Advisory.

Ethan’s company.

Ethan stood.

“What the hell are you doing?”

“Telling the truth.”

Julian moved toward the DJ booth.

The DJ quietly stepped between us.

That surprised me.

I continued.

“The company demanded repayment of one hundred eighty-four thousand dollars before deciding whether to pursue further civil action.”

Carol covered her mouth.

Nobody had known.

Julian had told his family he received a generous severance.

He told friends the new CEO wanted younger leadership.

He told everyone except me a version where he was the victim.

I was the one who received the actual termination letter.

I was the one sitting beside him when he cried.

I was the one who believed him when he said:

“If this becomes public, I’ll never work again.”

So I protected him.

I went back to work nine weeks after giving birth.

I sold investments my father left me.

I negotiated a repayment agreement.

And I kept Julian’s secret because I thought protecting my husband meant protecting our family.

My voice shook once.

Then steadied.

“So when Julian tells you I ‘let myself go,’ what he really means is that I stopped having time to look decorative while I was paying for the consequences of his decisions.”

Nobody laughed now.

Selina slowly stepped away from Ethan.

Julian looked at me with absolute hatred.

Then I delivered the part he clearly had not expected.

“And Julian?”

His jaw tightened.

“Yes?”

“I found Mercer Strategic Advisory’s current bank records three weeks ago.”

Ethan went pale.

Julian stopped moving.

I looked from one brother to the other.

“The company you both told me was shut down two years ago is still operating.”

Then:

“And someone has been depositing eleven thousand dollars into it every month.”

May you like

Julian had been earning money again for almost a year.

He had simply forgotten to tell his wife.
