Chapter 14 - THE LAST DINNER AT BELLAMY'S

At 8:17 P.M., exactly three days after Dominic Vale had humiliated his deaf son, we returned to Bellamy's Steakhouse.
But this time, nobody was laughing.
The restaurant's windows were dark.
The entrance was locked.
Victor Sloane waited inside.
Nora had warned us not to act alone.
Her team surrounded the building while negotiators established contact with Victor.
Dominic insisted on speaking to him.
“I created this problem,” he said. “I won't let innocent people pay for it.”
Nora looked at him coldly.
“Then you'll follow my instructions.”
Dominic nodded.
I had never seen him obey anyone so quickly.
Through a video connection, Victor appeared seated at the same table where Caleb had ordered dinner.
He held a gun.
My coworkers sat frightened behind him.
“Well,” Victor said, “the happy family finally found each other.”
Dominic stood where the camera could see him.
“Let the employees go.”
Victor laughed.
“Still giving orders?”
“You want me. Not them.”
“I want the ledger. Every copy.”
Dominic reached inside his coat and removed a sealed folder.
Then he said something I never expected.
“You've already lost, Victor.”
Victor's expression changed.
Dominic continued.
“I've given federal investigators my own records. Every illegal deal, every payment, every crime I helped conceal.”
I stared at him.
He was surrendering the empire he'd built.
Victor's face twisted with rage.
“You think they'll let you walk away?”
“No,” Dominic answered. “And they shouldn't.”
For a moment, the restaurant was completely silent.
Then Victor dragged one of the waitresses to her feet.
I recognized her immediately.
Maria, a single mother who had trained me on my first day at Bellamy's.
My hands turned cold.
Caleb touched my wrist.
Look at me, he signed.
I did.
Don't give him what he wants.
I nodded.
Nora's negotiator kept Victor talking while the team worked to get the hostages out.
A few terrifying minutes later, a side door opened.
Maria emerged with the bartender.
Then another employee.
Then two more.
Victor realized what was happening.
He lunged toward the rear of the restaurant.
But officers were already closing in.
I heard a crash.
Then shouted commands.
Then silence.
Nobody moved.
Finally, Nora's voice came through the radio.
“Suspect in custody. All hostages accounted for.”
My legs nearly gave out.
Victor Sloane had been arrested.
The man responsible for Isabel's disappearance, Caleb's suffering, and Evan's death could no longer hide behind the Vale family.
Dominic lowered his head.
Caleb watched his father for a long moment.
Then he signed something.
I translated quietly.
You finally chose to tell the truth.
Dominic looked at him.
“I wish I'd done it years ago.”
Caleb didn't forgive him.
Not then.
But he didn't walk away, either.
Three weeks later, Elena came to my apartment carrying a small envelope.
It was yellowed with age.
My name was written across the front in Evan's handwriting.
I felt my throat tighten.
“Where did you get that?”
“Caleb gave it to me,” Elena explained. “Evan entrusted it to him before he died. He asked Caleb to keep it safe until the danger was over.”
I turned the envelope over.
There was one final instruction.
For Hannah. Open when you finally believe your dreams matter.
I stared at those words.

My brother had been gone for six years.
But he still had one last secret to share with me.
