Chapter 13 - THE VOICE THAT EXPOSED A KILLER

For six years, I believed my brother's heart had simply stopped.
Now I knew someone had helped make sure it never started again.
I stared at Halden's name until the letters blurred.
“Can we prove it?” I asked Elena.
“We're getting closer.”
Meanwhile, Nora's independent investigators examined the original files Isabel had preserved.
The records included payment instructions, messages, and photographs.
But one particular item changed everything.
An archived emergency dispatch recording from the night Evan died.
Evan had been conscious when Caleb called for help.
The dispatcher had repeatedly requested access for the ambulance.
But another voice was heard instructing officers to keep the street blocked.
Nora identified it as Captain Halden.
Then investigators recovered a recording of a conversation Victor had made several days later.
Victor's voice was unmistakable.
“Mercer knew too much. I told Halden not to let the ambulance through until it was too late.”
I felt something inside me break.
My brother hadn't merely been the victim of a cruel coincidence.
He had been deliberately denied help.
Victor had known Evan's heart condition made every minute critical.
And he'd used it against him.
When Nora visited me that afternoon, she didn't offer empty promises.
She showed me the progress of the investigation.
An independent forensic review had exposed the forged bank documents.
The evidence supported dropping the accusations against me, and the prosecutor authorized my release.
Captain Halden was being investigated for obstruction and corruption.
I stepped outside the station shortly before sunset.
Caleb was waiting beside Elena's car.
When he saw me, his face changed.
He hurried forward.
Are you okay?
I nodded.
Then I shook my head.
I don't know.
He opened his arms but waited.
I stepped into them.
For the first time in days, I let myself cry.
Caleb held me without trying to fix anything.
And somehow, that helped.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from Dominic.
Caleb read it.
His expression sharpened.
He turned the screen toward me.
Victor knows the evidence is with the federal investigators.
Another message appeared.
He's at Bellamy's.
My stomach tightened.
Bellamy's Steakhouse.
The place where everything had begun.
A third message followed.
He's holding the night staff inside.
I recognized every name on the attached list.
My manager.
The bartender.
Two waitresses who'd worked beside me for years.
Then Victor sent a photograph.
Six frightened employees were sitting inside the restaurant.
On the table in front of them stood a handwritten sign.
