Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO REMEMBERED EVERYTHING

Daniel Keene opened the door with a shotgun.

Rhett didn’t flinch.

Isa did.

Then Daniel saw her.

The weapon lowered.

“Sammy’s little girl.”

Isa hadn’t heard anyone call her that in twelve years.

Daniel looked seventy now.

Gray beard.

Tired eyes.

A man shaped by too many locked doors.

“You’re alive,” Isa whispered.

“So are you.”

“Why did you disappear?”

Daniel looked past her toward Rhett.

“Because the people who killed your father came after me next.”

Inside, the house had no photographs.

No internet.

Three locks on every door.

Isa understood him immediately.

Fear had become architecture.

Daniel told them everything.

Samuel discovered Gideon Shaw was laundering stolen money through Valin contracts.

Mason handled intimidation.

When Samuel prepared to expose them, Gideon ordered his death.

“Mason drove the car that forced your father off the road.”

Isa’s face emptied.

Rhett said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“I had the original ledger. Sam gave it to me the night before he died.”

“Where is it?”

“Gone.”

Rhett’s eyes narrowed.

“Mason?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Isa’s mother.”

Isa stared.

“My mother?”

“Evelyn came here after the funeral. She said keeping it with me would get us both killed. She took it somewhere nobody connected to the investigation could reach.”

“Where?”

“She never told me.”

Isa remembered the suitcase.

The pendant.

Her mother had known far more than she ever admitted.

Daniel opened a drawer.

“I do have this.”

An old cassette recorder.

Samuel’s voice filled the room.

“If something happens to me, Isa must never know until she’s old enough to choose what to do with the truth.”

Isa cried silently.

Then Samuel said something unexpected.

“Mason knows about her. Keep him away.”

The recording had been made before Samuel died.

Years before Isa met Mason.

Mason hadn’t randomly found her in college.

He had been watching her since she was fifteen.

Isa stood abruptly.

“I need air.”

Outside, she reached the porch before her legs weakened.

Rhett caught her.

She shoved him once.

Not because she was angry with him.

Because she was angry with every man who had controlled pieces of her life without her permission.

Rhett let her.

Then Isa began crying.

“I don’t know what was real.”

Rhett’s voice was quiet.

“This is.”

He didn’t touch her until she reached for him first.

Then he held her carefully, avoiding her injured ribs.

For several seconds, Isa allowed herself to feel safe.

Daniel opened the door.

“There’s more.”

They returned inside.

He placed an old wedding photograph on the table.

Evelyn Ward stood beside Samuel.

Behind them was Gideon Shaw.

Isa stared.

“My mother knew him?”

Daniel nodded.

“Before she met your father.”

“How?”

May you like

Daniel’s answer changed everything.

“Gideon Shaw was your mother’s brother.”
