Chapter 15 - THE DOOR SHE CHOSE TO OPEN

Six months later, Isa Voss had five keys on her key ring.
Not one of them belonged to Mason.
One opened her apartment.
One opened her new office.
One opened the small studio where she ran a nonprofit program helping women leaving dangerous homes replace locks, secure documents, find emergency housing, and rebuild financial independence.
The fourth belonged to Rhett’s house.
He had given it to her only after asking.
The fifth opened nothing important.
It was the old brass key to Box 614.
Isa kept it because she liked remembering that a key could reveal the truth instead of trapping someone.
Mason Voss accepted a plea agreement that guaranteed he would not be anywhere near Isa for a very long time.
Gideon Shaw went to trial.
Andrew Mercer testified.
Cole resigned from Valin Security for several months to deal with what his brother had done, then returned on his own terms.
Rhett began restructuring the empire he had inherited.
Several illegal operations disappeared completely.
The legitimate businesses remained.
Casinos, shipping, real estate, and security.
People still called him Chicago’s most feared mafia boss.
Rhett hated the title more every month.
Isa occasionally used it when she wanted to annoy him.
On a cold February morning, exactly one year after Rhett found her on the kitchen floor, Isa entered Valin House at 7:12.
Rhett was standing in the kitchen.
He looked at the clock.
“You’re late.”
“I don’t work here.”
“Still late.”
“For what?”
“Breakfast.”
Isa looked at the table.
Eggs.
Toast.
Coffee.
And pancakes shaped like something that might have been hearts if viewed from far enough away.
She stared.
“You cooked?”
“Don’t sound so frightened.”
“I’ve seen your coffee.”
Rhett pulled out a chair.
Isa sat.
There were flowers beside her plate.
Nothing enormous.
Nothing expensive.
Daisies.
Her favorite.
She looked at him.
“You remembered.”
“I remember everything about you.”
A year ago, words like that from Mason would have sounded like a threat.
From Rhett, they felt different.
Because Rhett remembered without monitoring.
Loved without owning.
Protected without controlling.
They ate badly cooked pancakes.
Afterward, Rhett took her onto the back terrace.
Snow covered Chicago.
Isa tucked her hands into her coat.
“What are we doing out here?”
“I need to ask you something.”
She turned.
Rhett was holding a small box.
This time, there was a ring inside.
Isa stared at him.
He didn’t kneel immediately.
Instead, he said, “Before I ask, there are rules.”
She laughed.
“Of course you have rules.”
“You can say no.”
Her smile softened.
“You can say not yet.”
She nodded.
“You can change your mind tomorrow.”
“Rhett.”
“And if you say yes, you keep your apartment as long as you want. You keep your work. You keep every part of your life that belongs to you.”
Tears filled her eyes.
He finally went down on one knee.
“Isa Voss, I don’t want to protect you from the world.”
He looked up at her.
“I want to stand beside you while you decide what you want from it.”
Isa laughed through tears.
“That was almost romantic.”
“I practiced.”
“I can tell.”
“So?”
She looked toward the house.
One year ago, she had crawled toward a lock because a man with a key had made her afraid inside her own home.
Now there was a warm house behind her.
A man waiting instead of demanding.
And a door she could walk through or away from whenever she chose.
“Yes.”
Rhett stood.
Isa kissed him before he could put the ring on.
He laughed against her mouth.
“That means yes?”
“It means put the ring on before I reconsider.”
He did.
That evening, they returned to Isa’s apartment.
Rhett stopped outside the door.
As always.
He never used his key unless she asked him to.
Isa unlocked the deadbolt herself.
Then she looked back.
“You coming in?”
“Are you inviting me?”
“Yes.”
Rhett smiled.
Isa opened the door wider.
For years, keys had meant danger.
Control.
Someone entering when she said no.
But healing had taught her something Mason never understood.
Safety wasn’t about finding a stronger lock.
It was about knowing the person on the other side would wait until you chose to open the door.
Isa took Rhett’s hand and pulled him inside.
Then she locked the door behind them.
Not because she was afraid.
Because this time, the home was hers.
May you like
The choice was hers.
And so was the man she had chosen to share it with.
