Chapter 2 - THE MAN MY FATHER TRUSTED

The photograph should have made things clearer.
Instead, it made everything worse.
Mom sat on the edge of the sofa, staring at my father’s handwriting.
For twenty-four years, Sarah Bennett had believed one simple story:
Her husband had abandoned us.
He had emptied part of their savings, packed a suitcase, and disappeared without saying goodbye.
That story had shaped both of our lives.
Now my father’s own handwriting suggested he had expected something to happen to him.
“Did Dad ever mention Aaron Blake?” I asked.
Mom shook her head slowly.
“Not directly.”
“Then why do you look like you recognize the name?”
She closed her eyes.
“Because your father said ‘Aaron’ once.”
“When?”
“The night before he disappeared.”
That stopped me.
Mom explained that my father had received a late phone call. She had been upstairs but heard him arguing in the kitchen.
He had said:
“Aaron already knows. If they come after me, he’ll know what to do.”
The next morning, Dad acted normal.
The following night, he vanished.
Mom had spent years assuming the call was connected to another woman, gambling, debt—anything except what the photograph now suggested.
I reached for my phone.
“We call Julian.”
“No.”
“Mom—”
“I want him standing in front of me when he explains this.”
Her voice was calm, but I knew that tone.
It was the same voice she had used when I was fifteen and a school administrator unfairly accused me of cheating.
Sarah Bennett could forgive almost anything.
She could not tolerate being lied to.
Then her phone rang.
Julian.
Neither of us moved.
It rang again.
Mom finally answered and put it on speaker.
“Sarah?”
His voice sounded different now.
Tighter.
“Are you alone?”
Mom looked at me.
“Claire is here.”
There was a long silence.
Then Julian said:
“Claire recognized me, didn’t she?”
My blood went cold.
Mom gripped the phone.
“So you knew this could happen?”
“Yes.”
“Who are you?”
Another silence.
Then he said something neither of us expected.
“My legal name really is Julian Mercer now. But Claire is right. I used to be Aaron Blake.”
Mom’s eyes filled.
“Why did my husband write that you would know what happened to him?”
Julian inhaled slowly.
“Sarah, lock your doors.”
“What?”
“Do it now.”
I walked toward the window.
A dark SUV was parked across the street.
Its lights were off.
May you like
Julian continued:
“Because if Claire found that photograph, there’s a chance someone else already knows you have it.”
