Chapter 1 - THE NAME I KNEW

“His name isn’t even Julian.”
My mother stared at me as if I had suddenly started speaking another language.
“What?”
I swallowed.
“The man who just sat at your table calls himself Julian Mercer. But twenty-six years ago, he used another name.”
Sarah rose halfway from the chair.
“Claire, stop.”
“I can’t.”
I pulled out my phone and opened the photograph I had spent the entire dinner trying not to look at.
Three months earlier, while working late at the financial investigation firm where I handled old corporate fraud cases, I had been reviewing digitized newspaper archives connected to the collapse of a company called Harlow Development.
One photograph had stayed with me.
Five men walking down courthouse steps.
One of them was my father.
Another was the man who had just kissed my mother goodbye.
I placed the phone on the table.
Mom leaned closer.
Her face changed.
The younger version of Julian had darker hair and a thinner face, but the eyes were unmistakable.
Beneath the photograph was a caption:
AARON BLAKE, FORMER HARLOW FINANCIAL OFFICER, LEAVES FEDERAL COURT FOLLOWING CLOSED-DOOR TESTIMONY.
Mom whispered the name.
“Aaron Blake.”
“You know it?”
Her reaction frightened me more than the photograph had.
Instead of asking who he was, she stepped away from the phone.
Then she walked quickly toward the hallway cabinet.
“Mom?”
She pulled open the bottom drawer and dug beneath a stack of old photo albums.
When she stood again, she was holding a faded envelope.
My father’s handwriting was on the front.
SARAH — IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME.
My pulse jumped.
“Where did you get that?”
“Your father gave it to me three days before he disappeared.”
“Why have you never shown me?”
“Because there was nothing inside.”
She opened it.
I saw immediately that she was wrong.
The envelope had a second layer.
A narrow fold in the paper had come loose with age.
Something small slid onto the carpet.
A photograph.
My mother bent down and picked it up.
It showed my father standing beside Aaron Blake.

On the back, my father had written six words:
IF I VANISH, AARON KNOWS WHY.
