Chapter 9 - SYLVIA HAD BEEN PAID BEFORE SHE MET VICTOR

Sylvia denied it.
Then her accountant found the payment.
Two weeks before the charity gala where she met Victor.
$15,000.
Client:
North Harbor Clinical Supply.
Description:
Event brand consultation.
Sylvia remembered the job.
Small.
Routine.
They hired her firm to create promotional material for the gala.
She had no idea North Harbor was tied to Anthony.
No instruction to seduce Victor.
No secret mission.
But she had been placed in the room deliberately.
Daniel approved her guest access.
Anthony financed the contract.
Then Daniel introduced Victor to her socially after the event.
Not directly.
Through a table assignment.
Tiny manipulations.
No one forced attraction.
No one forced sex.
But the opportunity had been engineered.
Sylvia looked sick.
“I thought I chose this.”
Nora replied quietly:
“You did.”
Sylvia flinched.
Nora continued:
“So did Victor.”
Then:
“The manipulation matters for the crime.”
“It doesn’t erase the affair.”
Victor looked at Nora.
She had separated those truths better than he could.
Then Anthony’s lawyer transmitted terms.
He wanted immunity from “family retaliation.”
Not criminal immunity.
He knew Victor could not provide that.
He wanted assurance that Victor would not have him killed.
The fact he asked said everything about Victor’s past.
Nora looked at him.
“Well?”
Victor said:
“He gets it.”
Matteo stared.
“You’re serious?”
“Yes.”
“After Mom—”
“This isn’t about what he deserves.”
“It’s about what we become.”
Silence.
Then Victor’s attorney drafted formal non-retaliation language.
No private violence.
No intimidation.
All disputes through legal process.
Anthony agreed to meet.
Location:
Federal building.
Smart.
He arrived carrying the NICU binder.
Victor saw him for the first time in months.
Older.
Uncle Anthony smiled faintly.
“Fatherhood softened you.”
Victor answered:
“No.”
“Nora did?”
“No.”
He looked at the binder.
“Consequences did.”
Anthony’s smile disappeared.
He admitted the medical fraud began years earlier.
He justified it as reclaiming money from insurance companies.
Then greed expanded it.
Daniel modernized the operation.
North Harbor became the center.
When Nora discovered the duplicate labels, Anthony wanted her frightened away.
Daniel used the affair.
Then Anthony said:
“I never intended the babies harmed.”
Nora, watching remotely through counsel, said:
“You used their medication routes.”
Anthony looked toward the camera.
“That is not the same.”
“To a mother, it is.”
He had no answer.
Then he produced the additional evidence.
A contract.
Sylvia’s firm.
North Harbor.
But attached:
Internal note from Daniel.
Use S.M. proximity to V.R. if personal access develops.
Not instruction to create an affair.
But contingency.
Then another line:
If N.R. discovers relationship, residential separation likely.
Nora had been reduced to initials in a strategy memo predicting her marriage.
Victor read it twice.
Then Anthony said:
“Daniel wasn’t the one who wrote that.”
“Who did?”
Anthony looked toward Matteo.
Victor’s brother went still.
“No.”
Anthony smiled bitterly.
“Ask him.”
Matteo’s face drained.
May you like
And for the first time, Victor wondered whether his brother had been investigating the scheme—
or helping design it.
