Chapter 8 - ANTHONY CAME FOR THE TWINS' FILES

Victor’s first instinct was to move Nora and the twins to a guarded estate.
He said nothing.
That mattered.
Nora noticed.
“What were you about to say?”
He sighed.
“I was going to tell you where to go.”
She almost smiled.
“Progress.”
Then:
“What do you recommend?”
Better.
Marisol arranged temporary secure housing through legal channels.
Not Victor’s property.
Nora chose.
Victor accepted.
Anthony remained missing.
Then Daniel began cooperating.
Not out of conscience.
Fear.
He claimed Anthony threatened to make him the sole fall guy.
Daniel provided records.
The stolen pharmaceuticals were real.
But the deeper operation involved insurance reimbursement fraud.
Duplicate medical claims.
Fake destroyed shipments.
Resold drugs.
Money laundered through vendor companies.
Why use the twins?
Not personally.
Their high-cost medications created believable models for duplicate billing.
But Nora’s family status gave Daniel access to internal priority systems.
He tested duplicate processing on their deliveries.
That was the mistake.
Nora noticed.
Then Daniel admitted sending her the affair photos.
Victor nearly ended the interview when he heard.
His attorney stopped him with one look.
Evidence.
Not rage.
Daniel said:
“I needed her out of the penthouse.”
“Why?”
“Anthony believed she had copies.”
“He was right.”
“Yes.”
“Did you intend harm?”
“No.”
“Did Anthony?”
Daniel looked away.
That silence changed the room.
“What?”
“He said if she wouldn’t leave, scare her.”
“How?”
“Break-in. Nothing physical.”
Victor’s hands tightened.
Daniel continued:
“But I told him no.”
“How noble.”
“I’m cooperating.”
“You’re surviving.”
“Yes.”
At least he was honest.
Then:
“Anthony came to Chicago because Nora had something he needs.”
“What?”
“Original shipment ledger.”
Nora frowned.
“I don’t.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“You do.”
“No.”
“The NICU discharge binder.”
Her face changed.
When the twins came home, the hospital gave her a massive binder.
Medication logs.
Home care.
Supply forms.
Courier receipts.
She carried it everywhere.
Then stopped using it after moving information into an app.
She had taken the binder when she left.
Of course.
Inside, unknowingly, was a signed delivery sheet from North Harbor’s first duplicate shipment.
Original signature.
Original driver code.
Proof Anthony’s company handled both legitimate and duplicate cargo.
One piece connecting him directly.
Then Nora whispered:
“The binder is with my mother.”
Victor’s stomach dropped.
Nora had not stayed with her mother.
But she stored boxes there before leaving.
Anthony did not need Nora.
He needed the binder.
Victor asked:
“Where is your mother now?”
Nora grabbed her phone.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Marisol called local police for a welfare check.
Victor did not send men.
Every muscle in his body wanted to.
He waited.
Seven minutes later, police called.
Nora’s mother was safe.
At church.
Her house?
Front door forced.
Nothing obviously stolen.
Except one box.
The twins’ hospital binder.
Anthony had it.
Then Daniel’s lawyer called.
Anthony had contacted him.
He wanted a deal.
Not money.
Safe exit.
In exchange:
The ledger.
And one more piece of evidence.
Victor asked:
“What evidence?”
Daniel answered:
“Something about Sylvia.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
Anthony claimed Sylvia had not entered Victor’s life by coincidence at all.
May you like
She had been paid to meet him.
Sylvia went completely still.
