Chapter 12 - THE EMPIRE BUILT WITH MY MONEY

Two weeks earlier, I had stood barefoot in my hallway begging my husband not to leave me alone at thirty-eight weeks pregnant.

Now Garrick sat across from me in a boardroom while his own attorneys explained that I controlled the future of his company.

Life could change quietly.

Then all at once.

The dealership group employed 146 people.

Mechanics.

Sales staff.

Receptionists.

Drivers.

Accountants.

People with mortgages and children who had nothing to do with Garrick’s betrayal.

So I made one thing clear.

“I’m not destroying the company.”

Garrick looked up.

I continued.

“I’m protecting the employees.”

Under Abigail’s restructuring plan, Garrick would be removed from financial control pending investigation.

A professional turnaround executive would take over operations.

The dealership would remain open.

Employees would keep their jobs.

The luxury office Garrick had built for himself would be converted back into useful space.

His company car was surrendered.

His expense accounts disappeared.

Eleanor’s consulting agreement was terminated immediately.

Garrick signed each document without argument.

When it was over, he remained in the conference room.

“Why didn’t you shut everything down?”

“Because those employees didn’t abandon me.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I deserve that.”

“This isn’t about what you deserve.”

That surprised him.

“It’s about what Amelia and I need.”

“And what’s that?”

“Peace.”

For once, Garrick didn’t argue.

As I walked toward the door, he spoke.

“Clara.”

I stopped.

“I’m sorry.”

I looked back.

Months earlier, those words would have saved him.

Now they were only words.

“I believe you’re sorry,” I said.

“But I no longer believe being sorry makes you safe.”

I left.

Outside, Abigail was waiting.

She held an envelope.

“This came from the safe-deposit inventory.”

“What is it?”

“Your father left it for you.”

My name appeared on the front in his handwriting.

I hadn’t seen that handwriting in three years.

Beneath my name were five words:

OPEN WHEN YOU FINALLY KNOW.
