Chapter 11 - THE DIVORCE THEY PLANNED BEFORE MY BABY

The draft divorce agreement was brutal.

I would leave the house.

I would waive claims to Garrick’s companies.

I would accept a modest settlement.

And most astonishing of all, I would acknowledge that Garrick had been the “primary financial provider” throughout the marriage.

A lie designed to become permanent.

“They were rewriting history,” Abigail said.

I kept reading.

The agreement had never been shown to me because something changed.

I became pregnant.

My hands stopped on the page.

“Why would the pregnancy matter?”

Marcus opened another file.

“Because your trust changes when you have a child.”

My father had established several provisions I barely remembered.

When I produced a direct descendant, certain restricted assets moved into a new family branch trust.

Those assets included the Whitaker Capital note controlling the debt on Garrick’s dealership group.

Abigail stared at Marcus.

“So the moment Amelia was born…”

“Clara gained independent authority over the note.”

My father had built a safeguard years before I understood why I needed one.

Suddenly the timing made sense.

Garrick and Eleanor needed control of the house.

They needed my signatures.

They needed my trust access.

And they needed me believing Garrick held all the power.

“What was supposed to happen after the baby?” I asked.

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“There’s an email.”

He printed it.

From Eleanor to Garrick.

Once the child is born, convince Clara to sign the restructuring papers while she’s overwhelmed. After that, we can deal with the marriage.

I looked at Garrick.

He looked sick.

“I never agreed to that.”

“You didn’t stop it.”

“I didn’t see that email.”

“Because ignoring your mother was easier than protecting your wife.”

He had no response.

Then Abigail’s phone rang.

She answered, listened, and stood.

“What happened?” I asked.

Her expression changed.

“The lender completed its ownership review.”

“And?”

She looked at Garrick.

“Your dealership isn’t yours to control anymore.”

He went white.

Abigail turned to me.

“Clara, through your daughter’s branch trust and Whitaker Capital…”

May you like

She paused.

“…you now control seventy-two percent of the secured voting interest in Garrick’s dealership group.”
