Chapter 8 - THE MAN ANTONIO BURIED NEVER DIED

Antonio did not believe in ghosts.
He believed in forged records.
Paid doctors.
Closed coffins.
And families powerful enough to turn lies into official documents.
Paolo Vitelli had supposedly died seven years earlier in Palermo.
Antonio took control afterward.
He spent those seven years dismantling several violent operations his father considered essential.
That suddenly gave Paolo a motive.
“You weakened what he built,” Luca said.
Antonio looked at his brother.
“I made it survivable.”
“To him, that is weakness.”
Rusk traced Mercer’s payments.
The money originated from a Malta account controlled by a foundation.
The foundation director was an elderly priest in Sicily.
The priest had died two years earlier.
The account remained active.
Someone else controlled it.
Then Sofia Leone contacted them again.
Her missing father had returned.
Injured.
Terrified.
Dr. Leone admitted he had helped Paolo Vitelli fake his death.
Antonio said nothing for a full ten seconds.
“Why?”
“Your father threatened my family.”
“And now?”
“He returned three months ago.”
“To New York?”
“Yes.”
Dr. Leone had been forced to provide Antonio’s updated medical history.
Allergies.
Medications.
Emergency protocols.
That information allowed someone to select a compound capable of causing a severe reaction while leaving confusing evidence.
“Who ordered it?” Antonio asked.
Leone closed his eyes.
“Paolo.”
Luca stood and walked away from the table.
Antonio remained seated.
Evelyn watched him absorb the knowledge that his own father had tried to kill him.
Not for the first time, she saw how useless power became inside a family.
“Why involve me?” she asked.
Leone hesitated.
“Because Paolo knows who your father was.”
Antonio looked at him.
Leone continued.
“Thomas Foster helped American authorities years ago. Paolo never forgave him.”
“So revenge.”
“Partly.”
“What else?”
The doctor looked frightened.
“Paolo believes blood matters more than law.”
Antonio’s expression darkened.
“He intends to use Evelyn as a public successor.”
Evelyn stared.
“That makes no sense.”
“It does if Paolo controls the documents and controls you.”
“He doesn’t.”
“He thought he would.”
The plan had been larger.
Antonio dies.
Luca is framed.
Evelyn inherits temporary legal authority under the old family trust.
Then evidence surfaces linking her father to government cooperation, destroying her reputation inside the family and making her dependent on the only person offering protection.
Paolo.
He would return as the “rescuer.”
Control the empire through her name.
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
“He has never met me.”
“No,” Antonio said.
“That is his mistake.”
Then Marco entered with another discovery.
Paolo had booked passage from Ireland to Sicily under an alias.
Not after Antonio became ill.
Before the flight even left New York.
He had always planned to be near Shannon.
Which meant he had expected the diversion.
Someone inside the airline had known exactly where the plane would land if Antonio’s condition became critical.
And that person had reserved a private meeting room at Shannon Airport.

Security footage showed Paolo entering it forty minutes before Antonio’s plane landed.
He was already waiting for his son to die.
