Chapter 11 - MARCO’S NAME WAS ON THE LETTER

No one moved.
Marco stared at the screen.
“That is not my signature.”
Antonio looked at him.
For years, Marco had stood behind him in courtrooms, restaurants, funerals, negotiations, hospitals.
If Marco was involved, trust became meaningless.
“Give me your phone,” Antonio said.
Marco handed it over immediately.
“Your weapon.”
He surrendered it.
“Your credentials.”
Those too.
Evelyn watched without speaking.
Marco did not argue.
That made her believe him more, not less.
Luca compared the letter signature against previous documents.
It was nearly perfect.
But the digital certificate belonged to Marco’s security account.
Someone had access.
Marco thought for a moment.
“Stefano.”
Three months earlier, Stefano claimed a travel-system failure required all senior security credentials to be reverified.
Marco had entered his authentication code into an internal terminal.
A fake terminal could have captured it.
Antonio’s anger shifted.
Not gone.
Shifted.
Then Irish investigators found Stefano.
Dead.
Inside a rental cottage outside Galway.
No obvious violence.
An empty medication vial beside him.
The scene looked like suicide.
Evelyn had seen too many convenient explanations in two days.
“So he becomes the dead villain and everyone stops looking.”
Antonio nodded.
“Exactly.”
Forensic review found a hidden recording device in the cottage.
One audio file survived.
Stefano was arguing with a man.
The second voice was unmistakably Paolo.
“You promised Antonio would die over the Atlantic.”
Stefano replied:
“I did what you asked.”
Paolo:
“No. The flight attendant ruined it.”
Then something crashed.
The recording ended.
Evelyn’s skin prickled.
Paolo knew exactly who she was.
The next breakthrough came from Thomas Foster.
He called Evelyn directly.
For the first time in twenty-one years, she heard her father’s voice.
“Evie.”
She stopped breathing.
Only one person had called her that before Ethan.
“Dad?”
Silence.
Then a broken inhale.
“I’m sorry.”
Evelyn cried before she could stop herself.
Anger and relief arrived together.
“Where are you?”
“Palermo.”
Antonio stood.
Thomas continued.
“I found Paolo.”
“Get away from him.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because I’ve spent six years getting close enough to prove what he did.”
Antonio took the phone.
“Thomas, listen carefully—”
Thomas interrupted.
“No, Antonio. You listen.”
His voice sharpened.
“Your father is not trying to rebuild the old family.”
Antonio frowned.
“Then what?”
“He’s liquidating it.”
Paolo had already moved hundreds of millions into hidden accounts.
The attack on Antonio was not about control.
It was about creating chaos long enough to steal everything and disappear.
“And Evelyn?” Antonio asked.
Thomas’s answer revealed the deeper secret.

“She was never supposed to inherit.”
“She was supposed to take the blame.”
