Chapter 7 - THE HEIR NO ONE COULD CONTROL

:

Victor revealed everything.

The trust had never been designed for the children.

They were safeguards.

The real heir was me.

The three children existed to protect the bloodline.

My father had feared that whoever inherited the empire would eventually become what he had become.

So he created a succession clause requiring the heir to reject the criminal empire.

If I accepted it—

the trust would dissolve into legitimate businesses.

If I rejected it—

Victoria would inherit.

That was the final trap.

My father didn't want me to rule.

He wanted me to end it.

Victor stared at me.

“You've spent your life thinking power was the goal.”

“No.”

I looked at Lily.

“I think power is the problem.”

Victoria screamed.

“You idiot!”

She lunged toward me.

Marcus stopped her.

Derek dropped his weapon.

Victor looked defeated.

“You'll destroy billions.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I'll save people.”

The trust was activated.

Every criminal asset was liquidated.

Casinos.

Illegal ports.

Shell companies.

Hidden accounts.

The money was frozen.

Legitimate businesses were transferred into independent ownership.

No DeLuca could control them alone.

Victoria was arrested.

Victor too.

Derek cooperated with prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Luca testified.

The city changed.

For the first time in decades, the DeLuca name didn't make people afraid.

It made headlines for something else.

Reform.

I moved the family out of the estate.

We bought a smaller house.

One kitchen.

One table.

No armed guards at the door.

Lily chose the room with the biggest window.

Chloe chose the purple room.

Sophie laughed when she saw it.

“They're already fighting.”

I smiled.

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Because it means they're normal.”

My mother came home.

She had spent twenty years hiding.

Now she had grandchildren.

My father came too.

Older.

Frailer.

But alive.

The first night we all sat at the table, nobody spoke for a moment.

My father looked at me.

“You did what I couldn't.”

I smiled.

“You started it.”

“No.”

He looked at the girls.

“They finished it.”

I looked toward Lily and Chloe.

They were sharing dessert.

Sophie was laughing.

Marcus was telling a story.

Luca was trying to convince everyone he hadn't cheated at cards.

For the first time, I understood what family could look like.

Not blood.

Not power.

Choice.

Then Lily looked at me.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Can we eat dinner together tomorrow?”

I smiled.

“Every night.”

Chloe leaned against my shoulder.

“No empty chairs.”

May you like

I laughed.

“No empty chairs.”
