Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT THE EMPIRE FELL

At 11:41 P.M., I entered Sterling Tower wearing a black evening gown.

Not a maid's uniform.

Not a disguise that made me invisible.

A gown.

Because this time, I wanted Samuel Voss to see me coming.

Adrian stood beside me in a black tuxedo.

His hand rested lightly against my back.

"You ready?"

"No."

He almost smiled.

"Good. Neither am I."

The plan was simple.

And terrifying.

Sterling Holdings was hosting a private investor reception on the top floor.

Adrian had been invited before the engagement collapsed.

The invitation had never been canceled.

Reed's federal team was positioned throughout the building, operating under judicial warrants and coordinating with local authorities.

Their goal was to rescue my parents, secure the evidence, and arrest Samuel Voss.

Our role was to keep him occupied long enough for the operation to succeed.

As the elevator climbed, Adrian turned toward me.

"Harper."

I looked up.

"If anything happens, stay with Reed's team."

"Adrian—"

"Promise me."

I swallowed.

"Only if you promise not to do anything stupid."

He smiled.

"That may be difficult."

The elevator doors opened.

Music filled the room.

Champagne flowed.

Powerful businessmen and politicians laughed beneath crystal chandeliers.

And standing near the windows was Victoria Sterling.

She saw us immediately.

Her face drained of color.

"Adrian?"

He ignored her.

Samuel Voss stood beside the bar.

His smile disappeared when he saw me.

"Harper Quinn."

I walked toward him.

"Hello, Samuel."

His eyes narrowed.

"You look remarkably like your mother."

"Good."

I stopped in front of him.

"Then you know exactly who I am."

Samuel laughed.

"You're making a mistake."

"Probably."

I smiled.

"But I've been underestimated my entire life."

Adrian stepped beside me.

"It's over, Voss."

Samuel looked amused.

"You brought a maid to threaten me?"

"No," Adrian said.

"I brought the woman who helped expose you."

Victoria rushed forward.

"Adrian, please. You don't understand."

He turned toward her.

"You struck my mother."

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"My father told me Evelyn was hiding evidence that would destroy us."

"And you believed that justified hurting her?"

Victoria lowered her head.

"No."

For the first time, she looked ashamed.

"I didn't know about the medication. I swear."

Samuel's expression hardened.

"Victoria, be quiet."

She looked at him.

"No."

The room went still.

Victoria removed a small device from her purse.

"I recorded everything."

Samuel's face changed.

"What?"

"Every conversation. Every threat. Every time you told me someone had to disappear."

She looked at Adrian.

"I thought I could protect the family name. But I can't keep protecting him."

Samuel lunged toward her.

Adrian moved first.

He caught Samuel's arm.

Security guards rushed forward.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

"FEDERAL AGENTS!"

Reed entered with armed officers.

"Samuel Voss, you're under arrest!"

Chaos erupted.

Guests screamed.

Several guards reached for weapons.

But the federal team had already secured the exits.

Samuel tried to run.

Adrian blocked him.

For one terrible moment, I thought Adrian might kill him.

Instead, he stepped aside.

"Take him."

Reed's officers forced Samuel to the floor and handcuffed him.

I watched the man who had destroyed my childhood finally lose control.

But I barely had time to breathe.

A voice called from the hallway.

"Harper!"

I turned.

My father stood in a wheelchair.

Pale.

Exhausted.

Alive.

"Dad!"

I ran.

I dropped to my knees beside him and wrapped my arms around his shoulders.

He held me tightly.

"My girl."

I sobbed.

"I thought I'd lost you."

"Never."

He kissed my forehead.

"Never stop looking for the light, sweetheart."

Then someone spoke behind me.

"Harper?"

I froze.

Slowly, I turned.

A woman stood in the hallway.

Dark hair streaked with gray.

Blue eyes.

A familiar smile trembling through tears.

My mother.

Rebecca Quinn.

For nineteen years, I'd imagined this moment.

I thought I would scream.

Or demand answers.

Or tell her how much she'd hurt me.

Instead, I whispered one word.

"Mom?"

She nodded.

"Oh, sweetheart."

I crossed the distance between us.

And fell into her arms.

We held each other while the world moved around us.

While agents escorted prisoners away.

While reporters gathered outside.

While the empire Samuel Voss had built began collapsing.

For the first time since I was eight years old, I had both my parents.

But as we prepared to leave, Reed approached Adrian.

"There's something you need to see."

He handed him a sealed envelope recovered from Samuel's office.

Adrian opened it.

Inside was Robert Blackthorne's final letter.

He read silently.

Then looked at me.

His eyes were wet.

"What is it?" I whispered.

He handed me the letter.

At the bottom, Robert had written:

If Daniel's daughter ever finds her way back to our family, remember that courage is worth more than blood, money, or power.

And beneath that was one final instruction.

ADRIAN, WHEN THE TIME COMES, GIVE HER THE HOUSE I BUILT FOR HER.

I stared at him.

"What house?"

Adrian looked completely stunned.

"Harper..."

He swallowed.

"My father left you an estate."

May you like

And then he said something I never expected.

"It's the property where you grew up."
