Chapter 11 - THE BETRAYAL IN THE BACK SEAT

"Don't move."

Marco's voice was steady.

The gun was pointed directly at my heart.

For a second, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.

Marco.

The man who had protected Adrian for years.

The man who had helped search for my father.

The man who had stood beside us through every attack.

Adrian didn't move.

"Marco."

"Don't."

His hand trembled slightly.

Adrian's voice was dangerously calm.

"Put the gun down."

"I can't."

"Why?"

Marco's eyes filled with something that looked like shame.

"Because they'll kill my daughter."

The words hung in the air.

I stared at him.

"You have a daughter?"

He nodded.

"She's seven."

Adrian's expression changed.

"Where is she?"

Marco swallowed.

"Sterling's men took her three days ago."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because they said they'd kill her if I did."

The driver glanced nervously in the rearview mirror.

Marco tightened his grip.

"Pull over."

The SUV slowed.

Adrian spoke quietly.

"Marco, you've known me fifteen years."

"I know."

"You know I would have helped."

Tears slid down Marco's face.

"They sent me a video."

His voice broke.

"She was crying for me."

My chest tightened.

I thought of my father.

How quickly fear could turn love into desperation.

"What's her name?" I asked.

Marco looked at me.

"Isabella."

I swallowed.

"Does she like stories?"

He blinked.

"What?"

"Your daughter. Does she like bedtime stories?"

His expression crumpled.

"Yes."

"Then she deserves to hear another one."

Marco's gun wavered.

"Please don't."

"Let Adrian help you."

He shook his head.

"They'll kill her."

Adrian leaned forward.

"Marco, look at me."

Marco did.

"I've never abandoned one of my own."

For several seconds, nobody breathed.

Then Marco lowered the gun.

"I'm sorry, boss."

Adrian took the weapon.

But he didn't strike him.

He didn't threaten him.

He simply said, "We're getting Isabella back."

Marco covered his face.

I realized something then.

Adrian Blackthorne wasn't feared only because he was ruthless.

He was feared because people knew he kept his promises.

Even when those promises cost him.

We drove to an abandoned industrial property outside Troy.

Marco had been instructed to bring me there.

Instead, Adrian used the location to set a trap.

He contacted a trusted former federal investigator, Thomas Reed, who had once worked with Robert Blackthorne.

Reed arrived with a small team.

Together, they traced the communications used to threaten Marco.

Within an hour, they located Isabella in a vacant house several miles away.

The rescue happened quickly.

No shots were fired.

And when Marco finally held his daughter, he fell to his knees.

I watched from the doorway.

Isabella wrapped her arms around his neck.

"Daddy, I was scared."

Marco sobbed.

"I know, baby."

Adrian stood beside me.

"You okay?"

I nodded.

"She got her father back."

He looked at me.

"We'll get yours too."

I wanted to believe him.

More than anything.

But the relief didn't last.

Thomas Reed approached with a tablet.

"Adrian, we've decrypted part of the Nightingale files."

Adrian took the device.

Reed continued.

"Samuel Voss isn't just laundering money. He's been using Sterling Holdings to finance a network of corrupt officials and violent contractors."

"Names?" Adrian asked.

"Hundreds."

Reed looked at me.

"And there's a witness list."

My heart pounded.

"Is my mother on it?"

"Yes."

"Is my father?"

"Yes."

He hesitated.

"Harper, there's one more name."

He turned the screen toward me.

At the top of the list was a designation.

PRIMARY WITNESS: HARPER QUINN.

I stared at him.

"That's impossible. I was a baby."

Reed shook his head.

"No, Harper."

He opened another file.

"The evidence says you witnessed a murder when you were eight years old."

May you like

My blood went cold.

"And the person you saw was Samuel Voss."
