Chapter 2 - EMMA'S CAMERA NEVER STOPPED RECORDING

Richard stared at the name on the screen.

EMMA BENNETT FAMILY ARCHIVE.

Anna felt the room go cold.

Emma had been dead for almost two years.

Leo’s mother.

Richard’s wife.

Anna’s closest friend before she became her sister-in-law.

Emma had installed the original home-security system after a break-in while she was pregnant.

She had been obsessive about backups.

“Three copies,” Emma used to say.

“One in the house, one in the cloud, one nobody remembers exists.”

At the time, everyone laughed.

Nobody was laughing now.

Richard sat down.

“I closed that account after she died.”

The security technician replied through the speaker.

“Apparently not completely, sir. The camera archive continued syncing to a legacy server.”

“Can you access tonight?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“This is insane. Leo needs rest. We don’t need to turn his hospital room into an interrogation.”

Richard looked at her.

“Sit down.”

Her mouth opened.

“Richard—”

“Sit.”

She did.

The technician sent a secure link.

Richard opened it.

6:14 p.m.

The full recording played.

No missing time.

Anna stood near the kitchen.

Leo held his yellow truck.

Vanessa appeared behind him.

She looked down the hallway.

Then toward the kitchen.

Then down at Leo.

Leo turned.

He lifted the truck.

Maybe showing it to her.

Maybe asking something.

Vanessa leaned closer.

Her lips moved.

There was no audio.

Leo backed away.

One step.

Then another.

Vanessa reached forward.

And shoved him.

Not hard enough to send an adult flying.

But hard enough for a two-year-old standing beside a staircase.

Leo’s feet disappeared beneath him.

His body tipped backward.

Anna gasped in the video.

Then ran.

The recording ended.

Nobody in the hospital room spoke.

Vanessa’s face became completely white.

Richard looked at her for several seconds.

Then he asked one question.

“Why?”

She shook her head violently.

“That’s not what happened.”

Richard stared.

“We just watched it.”

“You don’t understand.”

“You pushed my son.”

“No!”

“You put your hands on him.”

“He was about to fall!”

Anna stepped forward.

“You pushed him away from you.”

“I tried to catch him!”

“No.”

Anna’s voice broke.

“You looked around first.”

Vanessa turned on her.

“Shut up!”

Richard stood.

Leo woke.

The boy began crying.

Richard immediately moved toward him.

Vanessa took one step forward.

Leo screamed.

Not cried.

Screamed.

“NO NESSA!”

Everyone froze.

It was the clearest sentence Leo had spoken all evening.

Vanessa stopped moving.

Richard stared at his son.

Leo pointed at her.

“Nessa push.”

Anna covered her mouth.

Richard’s face collapsed.

“Nessa push Leo.”

Vanessa began crying.

“Richard, please.”

He looked at her.

“What else have you done to him?”

“Nothing.”

“What else?”

“Nothing!”

A nurse entered.

Richard immediately lowered his voice.

“I need hospital security.”

Vanessa’s head snapped up.

“What?”

“You’re leaving.”

“Richard.”

“You’re leaving now.”

“You can’t do this to me.”

He laughed once.

Empty.

“I just watched you push my two-year-old son down a staircase.”

“It was a mistake.”

“A minute ago you said it didn’t happen.”

Vanessa’s breathing became shallow.

“I panicked.”

“Why?”

“Because Anna would twist it.”

Anna stared at her.

“I didn’t need to twist anything.”

Hospital security arrived minutes later.

Vanessa was escorted out.

Richard did not speak while she left.

Only when the door closed did he sit beside Leo and put his face in his hands.

Anna had never seen her brother cry like that.

Not even at Emma’s funeral.

Then Richard whispered:

“How did I not see this?”

Anna didn’t know what to say.

She looked at the paused image on his phone.

Vanessa’s hand extended.

Leo falling.

Then she noticed something.

In the upper corner of the video, reflected in the glass covering a framed picture, someone was standing in the hallway.

Watching.

Anna zoomed in.

Richard looked up.

“What?”

She turned the phone.

A man’s reflection.

Tall.

Dark jacket.

Standing inside the house while Vanessa pushed Leo.

Richard stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“Who is he?”

Richard’s face changed.

He recognized him.

Anna did too.

It was Marcus Hale.

May you like

Vanessa’s older brother.

The man who had supposedly been in New York all week.
