Chapter 10 - THE SECOND CAMERA

Anna did not go to the location.

Not alone.

Not immediately.

That was what whoever sent the message expected.

Instead, Detective Mills traced the photograph.

The metadata had been stripped.

But the background helped.

A blue motel sign.

A church steeple.

Railroad tracks.

They narrowed it to a town forty miles west.

Police moved first.

Anna waited with Richard and Leo.

For three hours, nothing.

Then Mills called.

“We found the motel.”

Anna stood.

“And?”

“The room is empty.”

Her stomach sank.

“But someone left a package for you.”

Police brought it back.

A brown envelope.

Inside:

A key.

A flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

Anna recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her mother’s.

I am alive.

Anna’s legs weakened.

Richard caught her elbow.

She kept reading.

I am sorry.

I left because staying would have put you where Emma was.

Anna covered her mouth.

Emma.

Not Vanessa.

Not Leo.

Emma.

Her mother had left because of Emma?

The letter continued.

Thomas is not the enemy you think he is.

But he is not innocent either.

Do not trust anyone who says there was only one camera in Richard’s house.

Anna stopped.

She read the sentence again.

One camera.

The staircase camera had revealed Vanessa pushing Leo.

What second camera?

Richard immediately called his home-security company.

They searched the device registry.

Nothing.

Anna remembered Emma’s legacy archive.

“Old cameras.”

Richard logged in.

Most had been disconnected years ago.

Kitchen.

Garage.

Nursery.

Office.

Then:

STAIRCASE B.

Richard stared.

“Where is that?”

The main staircase camera faced downward.

A second camera had once been installed inside a decorative smoke detector opposite the landing.

Emma had removed it from the visible system.

But not the archive.

Richard opened the recording.

6:14 p.m.

A second angle.

Clearer.

Vanessa behind Leo.

Marcus in the hallway reflection.

But this time they could see something the first camera missed.

Marcus was not merely watching.

He was filming Vanessa with his phone.

Vanessa looked at him before touching Leo.

Her face was terrified.

She shook her head.

Marcus pointed toward Leo.

Vanessa mouthed something.

Anna zoomed in.

Richard read her lips.

“No.”

Marcus stepped forward.

Vanessa whispered something else.

“I can’t.”

Then Marcus raised his phone.

Showed her something on the screen.

Vanessa began crying.

Leo turned.

Vanessa reached for him.

The movement looked different from this angle.

Still reckless.

Still responsible.

But not like the clean deliberate shove seen from Camera A.

She grabbed Leo’s arm.

Marcus moved behind her.

And pushed Vanessa.

Vanessa collided with Leo.

Leo fell.

Anna screamed.

Richard stopped the video.

Nobody spoke.

Camera A had made Vanessa look like the only attacker.

Camera B showed Marcus using her body to knock Leo down the stairs.

Vanessa had still lied.

Still deleted footage.

Still helped forge documents.

But the fall itself had been manipulated.

Richard whispered:

“Marcus wanted the first camera to see her.”

Detective Mills nodded.

“He positioned her.”

“Why?”

“To create evidence.”

Anna understood first.

“Against Vanessa.”

Mills looked at her.

“If Marcus needed someone blamed for harming Leo, Vanessa was perfect.”

Richard stared.

“So after using her to get close to me, they planned to sacrifice her.”

Anna looked at the flash drive.

“Then what is on this?”

They opened it.

One video.

Margaret Cole appeared on the screen.

Older.

Alive.

Anna began crying before her mother spoke.

“Anna.”

Her voice was the same.

Softer.

But unmistakable.

“If you are seeing this, then Marcus finally lost control.”

Anna wiped her face.

Margaret continued.

“Emma was your half sister.”

A pause.

“Thomas Bennett was your father.”

Anna shut her eyes.

There it was.

The missing parent.

Thomas.

Margaret continued:

“He was also Emma’s father.”

Richard sat down.

Anna and Emma had shared Thomas.

Margaret explained that Thomas lived two lives for years.

Evelyn knew about Margaret.

Margaret knew about Evelyn.

The two women eventually discovered Thomas had been using their identities and accounts to hide assets.

When they confronted him, he disappeared.

Later, he supposedly died.

But he had not.

Margaret continued:

“Thomas spent years trying to recover what he believed belonged to him.”

Leo’s trust.

Emma’s inheritance.

Bennett Medical assets.

“But Thomas is not the person who created the plan around Vanessa.”

Anna leaned closer.

“Who did?”

Margaret looked directly into the camera.

“The person who recruited Marcus.”

A photograph appeared.

Young Marcus.

Early twenties.

Standing beside a woman outside Bennett Medical Systems.

Anna recognized her.

Evelyn Bennett.

Emma’s mother.

Margaret continued:

“Evelyn did not die when Emma was sixteen.”

Richard’s face drained.

Emma had always believed her mother died from an aneurysm.

Another fake death.

Another missing parent.

“Evelyn created the first surveillance network.”

Margaret said.

“She believed Thomas would eventually return.”

“So why Vanessa?” Richard whispered.

The video continued as if answering him.

“Years later, Evelyn recruited Marcus Hale because his father had worked security for Thomas.”

Anna stared.

Margaret’s voice shook.

“But Marcus stopped working for Evelyn a long time ago.”

A second photograph appeared.

Marcus meeting someone in a parking garage.

The other person’s face was hidden.

Margaret continued:

“The person Marcus works for now has one objective.”

A legal diagram appeared.

Leo’s trust.

Richard’s guardianship.

Anna’s successor rights.

Vanessa’s forged appointment.

Then another name appeared at the bottom.

EMMA BENNETT.

Richard frowned.

“What?”

Margaret’s voice became quieter.

“Everyone has been asking who benefits if Richard loses control of Leo’s trust.”

Anna’s chest tightened.

“That’s the wrong question.”

Margaret looked terrified.

“The real question is who regains control if Emma Bennett is declared alive.”

Richard stood.

“No.”

Anna stared at the screen.

“No.”

Emma was dead.

Anna had watched her decline.

Richard had held her hand.

There had been a funeral.

A grave.

Margaret continued:

“I do not know whether Emma survived the night Richard was told she died.”

Richard stopped breathing.

“But I know her death certificate was altered.”

The video ended.

Silence filled the apartment.

Leo was asleep in Richard’s arms.

Richard looked destroyed.

Anna looked at Detective Mills.

“Can a death certificate be forged?”

“Yes.”

“Can someone fake a hospital death?”

“Difficult.”

“But possible?”

Mills did not answer immediately.

Then Richard’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He stared at it.

Anna whispered:

“Answer.”

Richard did.

No one spoke.

For several seconds, only breathing.

Then a woman’s voice.

Weak.

Familiar.

Richard turned white.

Anna heard it through the speaker.

“Richard?”

His hand began shaking.

“Who is this?”

The woman started crying.

“You always hated when I asked stupid questions.”

Richard could not breathe.

Only one person had ever teased him with that exact sentence.

Emma.

The supposedly dead wife.

The mother Leo had not seen since infancy.

Richard whispered:

“Emma?”

A pause.

Then:

“Don’t let them take Leo.”

The call cut off.

Before anyone could move, Anna’s phone received a live image.

Leo’s bedroom.

Their old house.

Empty.

Except for someone standing beside his crib.

A woman with blonde hair.
