Chapter 4 - THE EMPIRE I WAS ABOUT TO LOSE

Four hundred twenty million dollars.

An $18 billion empire.

And a forged agreement that threatened my controlling interest in the company I'd spent twenty years building.

On any other morning, those numbers would have consumed me.

But all I could see was Eva's little face.

All I could hear was Claire's voice.

You missed both of them.

My legal team spent the day examining the documents.

They found altered board approvals, suspicious transfers, and unusual access to my private accounts.

Marcus Sterling had apparently been preparing this for months.

And Sienna had given him something more valuable than money.

Access.

I remembered leaving my laptop open beside the bed.

Letting her use my phone to order dinner.

Giving her the code to my private elevator.

I'd mistaken intimacy for trust.

Now I was discovering how expensive that mistake could become.

At noon, Marcus called.

I answered.

“Adrian.”

His voice sounded smug.

“Long time.”

“What do you want?”

He laughed.

“Everything you took from me.”

“You tried to steal from this company twelve years ago.”

“That's your version.”

“It's what the evidence showed.”

Marcus went silent.

Then he said, “You always believed you were untouchable.”

I stared at the city beyond my office windows.

“I was wrong.”

He sounded surprised.

“What?”

“I said I was wrong.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Marcus laughed again.

“Good. You're finally learning.”

I ended the call.

I wasn't interested in trading threats.

I wanted the records preserved and the fraud investigated.

But I also knew Marcus wouldn't stop simply because I discovered him.

That afternoon, an independent forensic accountant delivered preliminary findings.

The scheme was broader than we'd realized.

Fake charitable grants.

Inflated construction contracts.

Payments routed through overseas accounts.

And internal approvals linked to executives I'd trusted for years.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Jonathan Pierce.

My chief financial officer.

A man who'd attended my wedding.

A man who'd sent flowers when Claire underwent her second fertility treatment.

A man who'd visited our nursery three weeks before the twins were born.

I stared at the report.

“Jonathan?”

The accountant nodded.

“He had access to the records needed to facilitate the transactions.”

My stomach tightened.

Then I remembered something.

Claire had stopped inviting Jonathan to dinner months earlier.

I'd asked why.

She'd said, “I don't trust him.”

I'd laughed.

“Claire, Jonathan's been with me for fifteen years.”

She'd looked at me with a sadness I hadn't understood.

“That's exactly why I'm worried.”

I closed the report.

For months, she'd been trying to protect me.

And I'd treated her concerns like interruptions.

My phone vibrated.

A new message.

From an unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Claire holding both twins inside a small living room.

I froze.

Then another message arrived.

Beautiful family.

My blood turned cold.

A third message followed.

Tell your wife to stop looking into the foundation.

I called Claire's attorney immediately.

“Someone is watching them.”

He became serious.

“Forward the message to me and the police.”

I did.

Then I received one final photograph.

It showed Claire standing beside a woman in a navy coat outside a pediatric clinic.

I recognized the woman.

My stomach dropped.

She was Jonathan Pierce's wife.

May you like

And beneath the photograph were six words.

“Claire has been working with her.”
