Chapter 11 - THE FATHER WHO TAUGHT ME TO WIN AT ANY COST

Richard Knox had taught me that weakness was expensive.
When I was twelve, he made me return a birthday gift because he considered it too cheap.
When I was seventeen, he told me never to apologize in business.
When I was twenty-five, he watched me acquire my first struggling company and said:
“Remember, son. People respect the man who controls the room.”
For most of my life, I'd believed him.
Now I wondered whether that philosophy had destroyed everything worth keeping.
My father lived in a private estate outside New York.
He rarely appeared publicly.
But he still held significant investments through family trusts.
And according to Claire's photograph, he'd been meeting Marcus Sterling and Jonathan Pierce.
I contacted my attorney.
“Find out what my father is doing.”
The investigation uncovered several financial relationships.
Some legitimate.
Others suspicious.
Accounts linked to my father's investment vehicles had received payments from companies associated with Marcus.
I stared at the records.
“Why?”
My attorney shook his head.
“We don't know yet.”
Then another document appeared.
An internal memo.
Signed by Richard Knox.
Dated eight months earlier.
Adrian must be removed from operational control before the next board review.
My stomach tightened.
My father had been planning to remove me.
But why?
I called him.
He answered immediately.
“Adrian.”
His voice was as cold as ever.
“Father.”
“I hear you've made quite a mess.”
I closed my eyes.
“Did you work with Marcus Sterling?”
A pause.
Then a humorless laugh.
“You've always been too emotional.”
I stared at the wall.
“Answer me.”
“You've been distracted.”
My jaw tightened.
“By Sienna?”
“By everything.”
His voice sharpened.
“Your marriage. Your children. Your mistress. You've forgotten what it takes to protect an empire.”
I felt sick.
“Did you know about the fraudulent transfers?”
Silence.
Then he said:
“I knew the company needed stronger leadership.”
My hands curled into fists.
“You tried to take control.”
“I tried to protect what our family built.”
“No. You tried to steal it.”
His voice hardened.
“Watch your tone.”
For forty-one years, those three words had worked on me.
Not anymore.
“Did you know Sienna was working with Marcus?”
My father didn't answer.
That silence told me enough.
I closed my eyes.
“You used my marriage to weaken me.”
Finally, he said:
“You weakened yourself.”
The words struck because they were partly true.
He hadn't forced me to betray Claire.
He hadn't made me ignore the hospital calls.
Those choices were mine.
But he'd been willing to exploit them.
I took a breath.
“I'm cooperating with the investigation.”
My father laughed.
“You'll destroy the company.”
“Then the company will have to survive the truth.”
I ended the call.
For several minutes, I sat motionless.
Then Daniel entered.
“Sir?”
I looked up.
“What?”
“Claire's attorney sent something.”
My heart tightened.
“A message?”
“A letter.”
I opened it.
It was handwritten.
Claire's familiar script.
Adrian, the babies are growing. Ethan smiled in his sleep today. Eva had a good appointment.
My eyes filled with tears.
I want you to understand something. I am not asking you to destroy yourself to prove you love us.
I swallowed.
I'm asking you to become someone our children can trust.
Then came the final paragraph.
There is one more thing I need to tell you.
My heart began pounding.
Before I left, your father offered me twenty million dollars to keep quiet about the company's finances.
I stared at the page.
May you like
Then read the final sentence.
“When I refused, he told me my marriage would be over before the twins were born.”
