Chapter 14 - The Woman Who Planned Everything

The person behind my unpaid wages wasn't another criminal mastermind.
She was the woman who had managed Ethan Hayes's appointments for twelve years.
Her name was Olivia Grant.
And according to Gregory's initial statement, she'd helped arrange the entire encounter at L'Osteria.
I stared at Detective Mitchell.
"Olivia?"
She nodded.
"She was Ethan's executive assistant."
I looked toward Ethan.
His expression had turned cold.
"Olivia handled my schedule, travel arrangements, and restaurant bookings."
"Why would she involve Norah?" Daniel asked.
Mitchell opened a folder.
"Investigators believe she and Gregory were attempting to conceal transactions linked to the Hayes trust. Olivia arranged for Gregory to hire Norah, knowing she was connected to Daniel."
I felt sick.
"She knew about Sam?"
"Yes."
"Then why refuse to pay me?"
"Gregory says Olivia instructed him to create a situation in which you would confront him during Ethan's dinner."
I stared.
"But why?"
Ethan answered quietly.
"Because she wanted me to see you."
I turned.
"What?"
"She believed seeing an exhausted mother begging for wages would provoke me into confronting Gregory."
Daniel frowned.
"Then why risk exposing Gregory?"
Ethan looked toward Detective Mitchell.
"Because she had a second plan."
Mitchell nodded.
"Olivia intended to present Gregory as the sole criminal responsible for the fraud while she retained control of the accounts and other evidence."
My stomach tightened.
"She was sacrificing him?"
"That's what the communications suggest."
Ethan stared at the table.
"And when Norah collapsed?"
"Gregory panicked. Olivia hadn't expected a medical emergency, and your decision to investigate directly disrupted their plan."
I remembered waking in the locked office.
The leather sofa.
My canvas bag.
Ethan's dark eyes studying my overdue bills.
My desperate fear that Mrs. Higgins would leave Sam alone.
One moment had changed everything.
I turned toward Ethan.
"Then why did you protect me?"
He looked almost offended.
"Because you needed help."
"But you didn't know me."
"That doesn't matter."
His answer came so naturally that I felt tears gathering.
Then he added, "I saw the baby bottle. The unpaid bills. You were unconscious on the floor, and Gregory wanted you arrested."
His expression darkened.
"I knew something was wrong."
Detective Mitchell closed the folder.
"Olivia has been detained for questioning. Investigators recovered communications linking her to several financial transfers."
Daniel exhaled slowly.
"So it's finally over?"
Mitchell looked at him.
"The immediate threat appears to be contained. But the investigation and legal proceedings will take time."
I nodded.
For once, I didn't need every answer immediately.
I needed Sam to be safe.
I needed Daniel to heal.
And I needed a life where my child's future wasn't decided by people fighting over money.
Several weeks passed.
Daniel began physical rehabilitation.
Ethan cooperated with investigators and stepped away from the criminal organization he'd inherited.
His attorneys worked with independent financial specialists to separate legitimate businesses from unlawful operations.
It was difficult.
There were consequences.
Investigations.
Former associates who refused to cooperate.
And uncomfortable truths about decisions he'd made.
But Ethan didn't retreat.
He gave evidence.
Accepted responsibility.
And worked to protect employees whose livelihoods depended on the legitimate companies.
Meanwhile, I moved into a modest apartment with secure locks, reliable heating, and enough space for Sam to crawl.
I refused Ethan's offer to purchase an enormous house.
"I don't need a mansion," I told him.
He smiled.
"What do you need?"
I thought carefully.
"A home."
He nodded.
"Then that's what we'll help you find."
Daniel visited Sam regularly while continuing treatment.
At first, I stayed in the room for every visit.
We talked.
Argued occasionally.
Cried more than once.
But slowly, we began rebuilding trust.
And one evening, while Sam slept, Daniel asked me something unexpected.
"Norah, do you still love me?"
I looked at him.
For a long moment, I didn't speak.
Then I answered honestly.
"Part of me never stopped."
His eyes filled.
"But love isn't enough by itself," I continued.
"I know."
"I need honesty. Stability. Someone who comes home."
Daniel nodded.
"I want to be that man."
I touched his hand.
"Then show me."
He smiled through tears.
"I will."
That night, Ethan visited to bring Sam a birthday present.
A small wooden rocking horse.
I laughed.
"He's not even one yet."
Ethan smiled.
"He'll grow."
Then he handed me an envelope.
I immediately frowned.
"Ethan..."
"It's not money."
I opened it.
Inside were legal documents.
The Hayes family trust had been placed under independent professional management, with court-supervised protections for Sam's interests.
I stared at the papers.
"You did this?"
Ethan nodded.
"Daniel agreed. We want Sam's future protected from anyone who might misuse it."
My eyes filled.
"Thank you."
He smiled.
"Your son deserves every chance we can give him."
Then he hesitated.
"There's something else."
I looked up.
"What?"
Ethan reached into his coat.
For a moment, I felt frightened again.
Then he withdrew a folded paper.
It was an old handwritten letter.
Daniel's writing.
I recognized it immediately.
Ethan handed it to me.
"He wrote this before he disappeared. Gregory confiscated it. Investigators recovered it among his belongings."
My hands shook as I opened it.
Norah, if anything happens to me, promise you'll tell Sam that I loved him before he was born.
Tears filled my eyes.
I continued reading.
And if I never get the chance to come home, please don't let our son grow up believing his father chose to leave him.
I covered my mouth.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
I bought something for you the day you told me we were having a baby.
My heart stopped.
I wanted to give it to you after he was born.
I looked toward Ethan.
He smiled gently.
"Daniel asked me to keep it safe."
Then he placed a small velvet box on the table.
May you like
Inside was a simple silver ring.
And suddenly, I realized Daniel had been planning a future with me all along.
