Chapter 12 - The Secret Beneath the Old Building

Ethan Hayes had spent his adult life defending his family's name.
Now he was about to discover that the greatest threat to that name had come from his own father.
"What's inside the archive?" I asked.
Ethan sat across from Detective Mitchell, staring at the old property records.
"I don't know everything."
"Then what do you know?"
"Our father operated several legitimate companies, but he also maintained a criminal network. When I inherited the organization, I believed I'd identified most of the illegal operations."
He paused.
"Daniel thought I'd missed something."
Detective Mitchell leaned forward.
"Such as?"
"Old financial accounts. Payments to public officials. Records involving medical supply businesses."
My stomach tightened.
"Hawthorne?"
Ethan nodded.
"Our father helped finance it."
I felt sick.
"Then Gregory's crimes started before Daniel disappeared?"
"Possibly years earlier."
Mitchell examined the records.
"These documents could explain why Gregory was desperate to recover the complete ledger."
I looked toward Sam, asleep in the stroller beside me.
He deserved a childhood far away from this.
Far away from men who treated families like financial assets.
I turned back.
"Will Ethan's family history put Sam in danger forever?"
Mitchell answered carefully.
"Exposing the scheme and protecting his legal interests should reduce the immediate threat. But we'll need proper safeguards."
Ethan looked toward me.
"Norah, when this is over, I want the trust placed under independent management."
I stared.
"You would do that?"
"It's Sam's future. Not mine."
His answer surprised me.
A man who controlled so much was finally willing to surrender control of something important.
Investigators moved carefully.
They searched the property under appropriate legal authority and located an entrance to the underground archive.
But Daniel wasn't there.
Instead, they found a chair, discarded restraints, and a small silver necklace.
Daniel's wolf charm.
I recognized it from the photographs.
My chest tightened.
"Was he hurt?"
Mitchell shook her head.
"We don't have enough information yet."
I closed my eyes.
"Please find him."
She nodded.
"We will keep looking."
Several hours later, investigators recovered a damaged computer from the archive.
Forensic specialists extracted a collection of recorded conversations.
One contained Gregory's voice.
Another belonged to Daniel.
The third made Ethan turn white.
His father.
Arthur Hayes.
The recording had been made years earlier.
Arthur's voice sounded tired.
"Daniel, if you're hearing this, then something has happened to me."
I stared at Ethan.
He looked shocked.
Daniel had been a teenager when their father died.
Arthur continued.
"I made terrible decisions. I built a business that rewarded greed and punished honesty."
A pause.
"Your brother will inherit more responsibility than he understands. He may become exactly what I became unless someone shows him another way."
Ethan covered his mouth.
The recording continued.
"That's why I created the archive. Not to protect the family name. To make sure the truth could eventually be told."
I felt tears gathering.
Then Arthur said something unexpected.
"Daniel, I know you're different from us."
A long silence.
"And if the day comes when you must choose between loyalty to the family and protecting innocent people, choose the innocent."
The recording ended.
Ethan lowered his head.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Detective Mitchell's phone rang.
She listened.
Her expression changed.
"Where?"
My heart stopped.
She turned toward us.
"Officers located Daniel."
I rose so quickly my chair scraped across the floor.
"Is he alive?"
"Yes."
I began crying.
But Mitchell wasn't finished.
"He's at a hospital. He's being treated for injuries and exhaustion."
I grabbed my coat.
"Take me to him."
Ethan stood beside me.
Then Mitchell added something that made us both freeze.
"Daniel escaped Gregory's custody with help from a woman."
I stared.
"Who?"
Mitchell looked down at her notes.
"Her name is Margaret Higgins."
My mouth fell open.
"Mrs. Higgins?"
The babysitter I had believed was helping Gregory.
The woman who had secretly taken Sam to see Daniel.
Had she actually been trying to save him?
May you like
Then the detective revealed the final surprise.
"Mrs. Higgins has been cooperating with investigators for weeks."
