Chapter 5 - THE FATHER WHO CHOSE THE WRONG WAR

Alex stood in the darkened safe room with Nanya in his arms.

Nora beside him.

Dominic opposite.

Roman at the security console.

Thomas’s voice came from every speaker.

Alex looked toward the ceiling.

“You had eleven years to speak to me.”

No answer.

“You let me bury you.”

Silence.

“You let Dominic raise me.”

Dominic flinched.

Thomas finally said:

“I did what I thought would keep you alive.”

Alex laughed bitterly.

“Apparently that’s hereditary.”

“Alex.”

“No.”

He set Nanya beside Nora.

Then stepped toward the microphone.

“You don’t get my name until you answer.”

A pause.

Then Thomas said:

“I survived the Queens hit.”

“Who ordered it?”

“Samuel.”

Alex froze.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I discovered the Blood Trust was not created to protect the family.”

Dominic frowned.

“What?”

Thomas continued.

“Samuel used the trust to hide every off-book Gene operation.”

“Then he made it hereditary so no single boss could destroy it.”

Alex’s jaw tightened.

“You amended it.”

“Yes.”

“Why Nanya?”

“I did not know Nanya would exist.”

“Then why the first biological grandchild?”

“Because I believed my son would never have children.”

Alex stared.

Thomas almost sounded ashamed.

“You were twenty.”

“Angry.”

“Unstable.”

“Becoming me.”

“I thought if you ever had a child, that child might force you to become better.”

Nanya whispered to Nora:

“That is a lot of pressure.”

Nora almost laughed despite everything.

Thomas continued.

“I added the clause as insurance.”

“If Dominic turned the family into something worse, your child would inherit the security companies.”

Dominic muttered:

“Thank you for the confidence.”

Thomas ignored him.

“Then I discovered what the archive really contained.”

Alex closed his eyes.

“Children.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“The Gene organization sometimes relocated witnesses.”

“Families threatened by gangs.”

“Women escaping abusive men.”

“Kids whose parents testified.”

“Legitimate protection.”

“Then Samuel monetized it.”

Silence.

“He sold identities.”

“He traded locations.”

“He moved children whose parents paid enough.”

Nora covered her mouth.

Thomas’s voice became rough.

“I tried to expose him.”

“He tried to kill me.”

“Dominic helped me disappear.”

Alex looked sharply at his uncle.

Dominic nodded.

One more lie.

One more dead man who never died.

Thomas continued.

“For years, Dominic and I worked together.”

Nora stared.

“Then why did he threaten me?”

“Because we disagreed about Nanya.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

Thomas said:

“When Nora became pregnant, Dominic wanted to bring her under family protection.”

“I said no.”

Alex’s anger sharpened.

“You wanted her gone.”

“I wanted the bloodline clause to die with you.”

Nora went pale.

“Meaning?”

Thomas didn’t answer.

Alex did.

“He wanted you to end the pregnancy.”

Silence confirmed it.

Nora’s eyes filled with rage.

Dominic looked at the floor.

Thomas continued.

“I never ordered anyone to hurt you.”

“You had Dominic threaten her.”

“Yes.”

“You had clinics track her.”

“Yes.”

“You watched my daughter for eight years.”

“Yes.”

Nanya looked at the speaker.

“That is creepy.”

Thomas stopped speaking.

The child stepped forward.

Alex tried to stop her.

She shook her head.

“You’re Grandpa Thomas?”

A long pause.

“Yes.”

“You wanted me not born?”

Nora closed her eyes.

Thomas’s voice weakened.

“I thought you would be safer that way.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Alex almost smiled despite himself.

Nanya continued.

“Did you want me dead?”

Silence.

“Grandpa?”

Thomas whispered:

“No.”

“Then why shoot at me?”

“I did not order the shot.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“Who did?”

Thomas said:

“Mason.”

“Without permission?”

“Yes.”

Roman shook his head.

“Mason never freelances.”

Thomas’s voice hardened.

“He does now.”

A new video feed appeared on the security monitor.

Thomas Gene.

Live.

Sitting inside an underground room.

Gray hair.

Burn scar near his temple.

Alive.

Alex stared.

His father looked back through the camera.

Eleven years of grief collapsed into a screen.

“Hello, son.”

Alex said nothing.

Thomas looked toward Nanya.

His face changed.

“So that’s her.”

Nanya waved once.

“You look less dead than expected.”

Thomas laughed.

Actually laughed.

Then his expression softened.

“You have your grandmother’s mouth.”

Alex frowned.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“Maria knew?”

Thomas’s face changed.

Alex noticed.

“What?”

Thomas looked away.

“Your mother knew about the trust.”

“She died before I met Nora.”

“Yes.”

“Then why does that matter?”

“Because Maria created the final failsafe.”

Dominic swore.

“What failsafe?”

Thomas looked directly at Alex.

“If Nanya reaches nine and the archive opens, every file automatically copies to twelve outside locations.”

Roman stared.

“Dead-man distribution.”

“Yes.”

“Can it be stopped?”

Thomas hesitated.

“Only one way.”

Alex’s voice became cold.

“No.”

Thomas stared.

Alex continued.

“If you say her death, I will find you before you finish the sentence.”

Thomas’s eyes filled.

“I was going to say my death.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

“The trust still recognizes me as primary settlor.”

“If I die before activation, control transfers to Nanya…”

“But?”

“The archive enters permanent sealed status for thirty years.”

Nora frowned.

“So nobody can open it.”

“Yes.”

“Then why haven’t you done it?”

Thomas looked at Alex.

“Because sealing it protects the people inside.”

“And the criminals.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Thomas continued.

“I spent eleven years trying to separate them.”

“Witnesses from traffickers.”

“Victims from buyers.”

“Undercover names from corrupt officials.”

“I’m almost finished.”

“How long?”

“Four months.”

Nora’s eyes widened.

“Nanya turns nine in three.”

Thomas nodded.

“That is the problem.”

Alex stared.

“So you need one more month.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re willing to kill my daughter to get it?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Thomas looked exhausted.

“I want her hidden.”

“No.”

“Alex.”

“No more hiding children.”

Thomas stopped.

The sentence hung.

Alex continued.

“No more fake deaths.”

“No more disappearing mothers.”

“No more family secrets justified as protection.”

“If the archive opens, we deal with what happens.”

Thomas’s face hardened.

“You don’t understand the scale.”

“Then help me understand.”

“I can’t over a compromised network.”

“Where are you?”

Thomas hesitated.

Then Roman’s monitor flashed red.

Incoming breach.

Roman shouted:

“Someone’s inside the perimeter.”

Gunfire erupted upstairs.

Dominic raised his weapon.

Alex grabbed Nanya.

Thomas’s live feed suddenly shook.

Someone entered his room too.

Thomas looked off camera.

“No.”

Alex stepped toward the screen.

“What?”

Thomas grabbed a gun.

“Mason found me.”

The feed exploded into movement.

A shot.

Another.

Then Thomas fell sideways.

The image went dark.

Nanya screamed:

“Grandpa!”

Alex stared at the dead screen.

Roman shouted from the console:

“We have armed men in the east corridor.”

Dominic looked at Alex.

“Decision time.”

Alex pulled Nanya close.

“No.”

“What?”

Alex’s expression became lethal.

“I’m done choosing between family and truth.”

He looked at Roman.

“Open the armory.”

Then toward Nora.

“Stay with Nanya.”

Nora grabbed his sleeve.

“Alex.”

“I’m coming back.”

“You promised her once.”

“I know.”

“Promise me.”

He looked at her.

For nine years, he had imagined Nora leaving.

Now he realized she had spent those years surviving a war he didn’t know existed.

He touched her face.

May you like

“I’m coming back.”

Then he went upstairs to take his house back.
