Chapter 4 - THE TRUST BUILT AROUND A CHILD

They returned to New York before dawn.
Nanya was asleep on the couch with Alex’s watch still clutched in one hand.
Alex stood in the doorway longer than necessary.
Nora watched him.
“She waited.”
“I said I’d come back.”
“She believed you.”
That mattered more than Alex wanted to admit.
Roman closed the study doors.
“We have a bigger problem.”
Alex looked over.
“When don’t we?”
Roman placed a set of archived corporate documents on the table.
The Gene Blood Trust existed.
Created nineteen years earlier by Alex’s grandfather, Samuel Gene.
Modified eleven years ago by Thomas.
The final amendment contained a biometric inheritance clause.
First verified biological grandchild of Thomas Gene.
Archive access activated at age nine.
Nora sat down.
“Why nine?”
Roman shook his head.
“No explanation.”
Alex read deeper.
The trust held almost no liquid cash.
Instead, it owned secure data vaults.
Property deeds.
Original ledgers.
Encrypted drives.
Witness statements.
And controlling shares in Gene Protective Services.
Roman stopped.
“That’s us.”
Alex looked up.
“What?”
“Gene Protective Services controls every security contractor the family uses.”
“Who has voting authority now?”
“Dominic.”
“And when Nanya turns nine?”
Roman stared.
“She does.”
Silence.
Nora’s face drained.
“My daughter becomes legal owner of the Gene family security infrastructure?”
“Through guardian authority until adulthood.”
“Who is guardian?”
Roman turned the page.
The document listed:
ALEXANDER THOMAS GENE.
Alex stopped.
So Nanya’s existence did not merely create emotional leverage.
It shifted control from Dominic to Alex through her.
That explained some things.
Not everything.
“Why would Thomas oppose it?” Nora asked.
Alex looked toward Slate’s final words.
Your father doesn’t want the trust opened either.
Roman searched further.
“The archive is sealed in three locations.”
“Where?”
“One in Manhattan.”
“One unknown.”
“One overseas.”
“What activates them?”
“Nanya’s verified DNA.”
Alex’s jaw tightened.
“No one gets near her.”
Nora looked at him.
“You think we can hide her forever?”
“No.”
“I think we find Thomas before her birthday.”
Roman’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then looked at Alex.
“Dominic is downstairs.”
Nora stood immediately.
“How did he find this house?”
Alex did not answer.
Only twelve people knew.
Roman’s face hardened.
“Security breach.”
Alex opened the monitor.
Dominic stood alone outside the gate.
No visible weapon.
No escort.
He held both hands where cameras could see them.
Then he looked directly into the lens.
“Alex.”
The speaker carried his voice.
“I know Nanya is inside.”
Nora’s breath caught.
Dominic continued.
“If I wanted her dead, she would not have survived the market.”
Alex stared.
“Convenient argument.”
Dominic looked at the camera.
“I need five minutes.”
Alex pressed the intercom.
“You have thirty seconds.”
“Thomas is coming.”
Alex went still.
“When?”
“Tonight.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I spoke to him.”
Nora whispered:
“Oh God.”
Alex’s voice hardened.
“Where is he?”
“Not on an open line.”
“This isn’t open.”
“Everything is open if Thomas built it.”
That sentence worried Roman.
Alex opened the gate.
Nora grabbed his arm.
“No.”
“He came alone.”
“That means nothing.”
“It means he’s either desperate or confident.”
“Which is worse?”
“Yes.”
Dominic entered.
He looked older than Alex remembered.
Not physically.
Tired.
He saw Nora.
Then Nanya sleeping through the glass doors.
His expression changed.
“Beautiful child.”
Alex stepped between them.
“Don’t.”
Dominic raised one hand.
“I’m not here for her.”
“You spent eight years threatening her mother.”
Dominic looked at Nora.
“I did.”
No denial.
Nora’s face hardened.
“You told me Alex would never choose us.”
Dominic lowered his eyes.
“I was wrong.”
“That’s not an apology.”
“No.”
“Then why are you here?”
Dominic looked toward Alex.
“Because Thomas is going to kill me.”
Silence.
Alex almost laughed.
“My dead father is going to kill my living uncle.”
Dominic nodded.
“Family holidays are complicated.”
Alex’s expression stayed cold.
“Explain.”
Dominic sat.
“Thomas discovered the archive when your grandfather died.”
“He wanted to expose it.”
“Why didn’t he?”
“Because once he saw the names, he realized exposing everything would get hundreds of people killed.”
“Witnesses?”
“Children.”
“Families.”
“Undercover agents.”
“People hidden under Gene protection.”
Nora frowned.
“So he buried it.”
“Yes.”
“Then why create the trust?”
“As insurance.”
“If Dominic took over?”
Dominic nodded.
“Thomas never trusted me.”
“Apparently accurately.”
Dominic smiled faintly.
“I did many things to deserve that.”
Alex stared.
“Did you order the market shooting?”
“No.”
“Mason Burke works for you.”
“Worked.”
“Who does he work for now?”
Dominic looked directly at him.
“Thomas.”
Alex felt cold.
Roman stepped closer.
“Proof?”
Dominic pulled out a phone.
A video.
Mason Burke stood beside Thomas Gene.
Alive.
Thomas looked into the camera.
Older.
Harder.
He said:
“Dominic.”
“You failed.”
“Alex found Nora.”
“He found the child.”
“You know what happens now.”
Video ended.
Alex stared.
“What happens now?”
Dominic looked toward Nanya.
“Thomas thinks the only way to keep the archive closed…”
He paused.
“…is to make sure Nanya never reaches nine.”
Nora stood so quickly the chair fell.
“No.”
Alex’s face became something terrifying.
Dominic continued.
“I spent eight years keeping Nora moving because Thomas’s people were looking.”
Nora stared.
“You threatened me.”
“Yes.”
“You terrified me.”
“Yes.”
“You erased my letters to Alex.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because every time you contacted him, Thomas’s surveillance network found you.”
Nora looked sick.
“So you made me afraid of you.”
“I needed you afraid of someone you could see.”
“While hiding the person I couldn’t.”
Silence.
Alex looked at Dominic.
“You expect me to believe you were protecting them?”
“No.”
Dominic’s voice became rough.
“I expect you to understand protection can still be cruel.”
Alex almost hit him.
Then Nanya appeared in the doorway.
Hair messy.
Alex’s watch on her wrist like a bracelet.
She looked at Dominic.
“Are you the bad uncle?”
Nobody moved.
Dominic actually smiled.
“Yes.”
Nanya frowned.
“That’s weirdly honest.”
Dominic’s smile disappeared.
“You look like your father.”
Nanya looked at Alex.
“I thought you were his brother.”
Dominic said:
“No.”
“I mean your father.”
Nanya pointed to Alex.
“He’s my father.”
Dominic froze.
So did Alex.
The child had said it without ceremony.
Without DNA reports.
Without permission.
Just fact.
Alex’s throat tightened.
Dominic looked away.
Then a red laser dot appeared on Nanya’s chest.
Alex saw it first.
He lunged.
“DOWN!”
Glass exploded.
Nora screamed.
Roman returned fire toward the trees.
Alex covered Nanya with his body.
A bullet hit the wall.
Then another.
Dominic grabbed a weapon from the hidden cabinet.
He fired toward the ridge.
Roman shouted:
“Shooter moving!”
Nanya cried beneath Alex.
He lifted her.
Nora crawled toward them.
Then the house speakers turned on.
A man’s voice filled every room.
Alex froze.
Thomas Gene.
“Son.”
Nanya stopped crying.
Alex stared upward.
Thomas continued.
“I’m sorry.”
Alex’s face hardened.
“For what?”
The speakers crackled.
“For making you choose.”
Alex held Nanya tighter.
“Choose what?”
Thomas answered:
“Your daughter…”
May you like
A pause.
“…or every person whose life depends on that archive staying closed.”
