Chapter 9 - THE CHOICE

The countdown began.
29:59.
29:58.
Gabriel stared at the screen.
“What do you want?”
His father's voice answered.
“Your company.”
“You already have it.”
“Not anymore.”
Gabriel understood.
“You want control of Sterling House.”
“Yes.”
“Take it.”
“No.”
The man smiled.
“I want you to choose.”
“Choose what?”
“Which child leaves.”
I froze.
Noah.
Lily.
Emma.
Three children.
One door.
I looked at Gabriel.
He shook his head.
“No.”
His father laughed.
“You always were sentimental.”
Gabriel walked toward the camera.
“You don't know me.”
“I know exactly who you are.”
“You created a monster.”
“No.”
Gabriel smiled coldly.
“I created myself.”
Then Ethan interrupted.
“Gabriel.”
“What?”
“The system isn't real.”
Gabriel looked at him.
Ethan pointed toward the control panel.
“The doors aren't connected to the countdown.”
I stared.
“What?”
“It's a bluff.”
Gabriel understood.
His father was trying to make us panic.
Ethan started typing.
“Give me three minutes.”
“You have two.”
“Then don't distract me.”
I held Emma.
Noah stood beside me.
Lily held Gabriel's hand.
The clock continued.
12:10.
11:09.
10:08.
Then the screens changed.
Files began uploading.
Every document.
Every name.
Every financial transaction.
Every genetic record.
Ethan smiled.
“It's done.”
Gabriel's father screamed.
“What did you do?”
“Published everything.”
The facility doors opened.
Federal agents stormed in.
Richard Roth was arrested again.
Gabriel's father was arrested.
The entire network collapsed within forty-eight hours.
But the biggest surprise came three days later.
The authorities discovered that Catherine had secretly protected dozens of children.
She had created safe identities for them.
She had been working with Ethan.
She had pretended to be dead to protect them.
And she had been the mysterious caller all along.
Catherine looked at me.
“I couldn't save everyone.”
“You saved my children.”
She cried.
“I should have saved you too.”
I hugged her.
For the first time, she looked like family.
Not a Roth.
Not a billionaire.
Just a mother.
---
Months later, the trials began.
Richard confessed.
My mother testified.
Ethan became a federal witness.
Gabriel sold the controlling shares of Sterling House and created a foundation for families affected by the program.
And me?
I left the agency.
I started my own company.
A smaller one.
A better one.
No one there cared that I had a complicated past.
They cared about my work.
And every morning, three children ran through the office.
Noah.
Lily.
Emma.
Sometimes they drove everyone insane.
But I wouldn't change a thing.
One evening, Gabriel came into my office.
Noah looked up.
“Prince!”
Gabriel laughed.
“Hello, matchmaker.”
Noah grinned.
“Are you marrying Mommy?”
I nearly dropped my coffee.
“NOAH.”
Gabriel looked at me.
Then smiled.
“I'm working on it.”
Noah whispered loudly:
“She likes you.”
“I know.”
I stared at both of them.
“You two are impossible.”
Gabriel came closer.
“Claire.”
“What?”
“I want to ask you something.”
I looked at him.
He didn't kneel.
He didn't produce a diamond.
He simply held out his hand.
“Will you let me be part of this family?”
My eyes filled with tears.
Not because he promised me luxury.
Not because he was a billionaire.
But because he wasn't asking to own me.
He was asking to belong.
I took his hand.
“Yes.”
Noah cheered.
Lily jumped up.
Emma laughed.
May you like
And somehow, the family that had begun with lies was finally becoming something real.
