Chapter 11 - THE CAR THAT NEVER STOPPED

Clara couldn't breathe.
For two years, she had believed her mother's death was random.
A dark street.
A speeding car.
No license plate.
No witnesses willing to come forward.
Now Joanne's voice filled the storage unit.
Calm.
Older.
Tired.
“I've spent twenty years believing silence kept Clara safe.”
Clara started crying.
Damian stood beside her but didn't touch her until she reached for him.
Then his hand closed around hers.
Joanne continued.
“I was wrong.”
She explained that Anthony had recently found her.
He wanted Elena's evidence.
Joanne lied and told him it had been destroyed.
He didn't believe her.
Three days before her death, she saw the same black sedan outside her apartment twice.
She wrote down part of the license plate.
Damian sent it immediately to the investigator.
The result came back within an hour.
The car belonged to a company controlled by Anthony Costello.
Clara sat down hard.
“He killed her.”
“Not proven yet,” the investigator said.
Clara looked at him.
“Don't.”
He stopped.
There was a time for legal caution.
This wasn't it.
The recording continued.
Joanne apologized to Clara for every lie.
For changing names.
For running.
For never introducing her to Gerard.
Then she spoke directly to Damian.
“If you became anything like the boy I knew, you will blame yourself for things adults did around you.”
Damian looked down.
“Don't.”
His throat moved.
“You were a child.”
Clara squeezed his hand.
Then Joanne gave them the evidence Anthony feared most.
A list of judges, officers, accountants, and businessmen who helped Vincent and Anthony steal from employees and partners.
Several were still powerful.
One of them had attended the peace dinner.
One had fired the gun.
Not at Anthony.
Near him.
The shooting had been staged to help Anthony escape.
The investigator compared the list.
The supposed shooter was connected to Anthony through a construction company.
Damian's face hardened.
“He planned the whole thing.”
“Probably.”
“And Victoria?”
“Used to create confusion.”
Clara thought of the cuff link.
A planted clue.
Everything Anthony did created a second explanation.
Then Joanne's recording ended with one final secret.
“Anthony did not work alone after Elena died.”
Clara leaned closer.
“The person helping him is still in Damian's house.”
Damian went still.
Joanne named the person.
Not Gerard.
Not Victoria.
Not a guard.
Mrs. Evelyn Price.
The estate's sixty-eight-year-old head housekeeper.
The woman who had hired Clara eleven months ago.

The woman who had assigned her to the kitchen that night.
The woman who knew exactly whose daughter she was from the moment she applied.
