Chapter 14 - The Choice That Changed Lorenzo Vitali

Lorenzo met Isabella three days later.

I wasn't there.

That was their moment.

Their history.

Their pain.

And I respected it.

But when he returned that evening, something about him had changed.

He looked exhausted.

Yet peaceful.

I was sitting at the kitchen table reviewing paperwork when he entered.

"How was it?"

He sat opposite me.

"Hard."

I nodded.

He continued.

"We talked for hours."

"About the children?"

"About everything."

I looked down at the papers.

"And?"

Lorenzo smiled sadly.

"Isabella is engaged."

My head snapped up.

"What?"

He nodded.

"She met someone while she was hiding. A physician who helped her and Sofia without knowing the full story."

I stared.

"She's engaged?"

"Yes."

"How do you feel?"

He considered the question.

"Relieved."

I blinked.

"Relieved?"

He nodded.

"Because she survived. Because she found someone who makes her feel safe. Because we can finally stop pretending we owe our younger selves the future we imagined."

Something loosened inside my chest.

Lorenzo leaned forward.

"We both agreed our relationship ended years ago, even though we never had the chance to say goodbye properly."

I swallowed.

"And the children?"

"We're going to build a family arrangement that puts them first. Slowly. With professional guidance."

I smiled.

"That's good."

He looked at me.

"Lily."

My heart began racing.

"Yes?"

"I owe you an apology."

I frowned.

"For what?"

"For the way I behaved when you said you had a date."

I almost laughed.

"You mean when you interrogated me about my perfume?"

He smiled faintly.

"That was inappropriate."

"Very."

"I was jealous."

My breath caught.

Lorenzo continued.

"But jealousy doesn't give me the right to control your personal life."

I stared at him.

He looked almost nervous.

"I've spent years confusing possession with protection."

His voice softened.

"I don't want to do that anymore."

I didn't know what to say.

He reached into his jacket.

For one wild moment, I thought he might produce a ring.

Instead, he placed a document on the table.

My resignation letter.

The one I'd written months ago but never submitted.

I stared.

"Where did you get that?"

"It was saved in your drafts folder on the shared office system."

My face burned.

"You read it?"

"Only enough to know you were considering leaving. I shouldn't have accessed it."

He pushed it toward me.

"I want you to know you're free to resign. No retaliation. No pressure."

I looked at him.

"What if I don't want to leave?"

"Then you can stay under a different reporting structure. Either way, your career is yours."

My eyes filled.

For the first time, Lorenzo wasn't making a demand.

He was giving me a choice.

I took a slow breath.

"Lorenzo, what do you want?"

He looked directly at me.

"You."

My heart stopped.

"But not because you work for me. Not because I can make your life easier or harder."

He swallowed.

"Because you're the first woman in years who sees me as a man instead of a position."

I felt tears gathering.

He continued.

"I don't expect you to answer tonight."

Then he stood.

But before he reached the door, I called his name.

"Lorenzo."

He turned.

I smiled through my tears.

"I don't want to be your secretary anymore."

His expression changed.

"Okay."

I stood.

"I want to know who you are when you're not giving orders."

For the first time, Lorenzo Vitali looked genuinely speechless.

Then he smiled.

"Would you let me take you to dinner?"

I laughed softly.

"Are you asking me on a date?"

"Yes."

I pretended to consider it.

"Will there be an interrogation about my perfume?"

He laughed.

"No."

"Will you try to approve my dress?"

"Absolutely not."

"Then yes."

He stepped closer.

But before he could touch me, his phone rang.

Marco.

Lorenzo answered.

His expression changed.

"What?"

A pause.

Then he whispered:

"Adrian's been arrested?"

I stared at him.

Marco continued speaking.

Lorenzo closed his eyes.

Then he looked at me.

"The authorities have recovered the original documents."

"What documents?"

"The ones proving Adrian falsified Isabella's death and stole control of the family assets."

My heart pounded.

"And?"

Lorenzo's voice broke.

"They also found a letter from my father."

I stared.

His father had died fifteen years earlier.

Lorenzo swallowed.

"The letter says he knew Adrian was planning to destroy our family."

May you like

Then he whispered:

"And he left instructions for how to stop him."
