Chapter 1 - THE LIGHT UNDER THE BASEMENT DOOR

At 9:58 p.m., I parked half a mile from the Mercer estate and walked the rest of the way.

Emily’s note was folded inside my coat pocket.

COME BACK AT 10 P.M. YOU WILL SEE WHAT YOU NEED TO SEE.

The house looked completely different at night.

No warm family dinner.

No polished smiles.

Only dark windows, security lights, and one thin line of yellow glowing beneath a basement door at the rear of the house.

I texted Maya:

I’m here. If I don’t check in by 10:30, call me.

Then I moved closer.

The basement window was slightly open.

Voices carried through it.

Victoria.

“You will sign it tomorrow.”

Emily answered weakly.

“No.”

Richard’s voice followed.

“You have no idea what you’re saying.”

“I know exactly what I’m saying.”

Then Daniel.

My fiancé.

Calm.

Impatient.

“Emily, stop making this harder.”

My stomach tightened.

I crouched beneath the window.

Victoria said:

“The doctors have already documented your instability.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Doctors you chose.”

Richard snapped:

“You are incapable of managing your own affairs.”

Then paper slid across a table.

Daniel said:

“Sign the financial power of attorney and everyone can stop fighting.”

My breath stopped.

Financial power of attorney.

Emily whispered:

“You mean so you can keep taking my money.”

Silence.

Then Victoria:

“Your money exists because of this family.”

“No.”

Emily’s voice shook.

“It exists because Grandma left it to me.”

There it was.

Inheritance.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Claire doesn’t need to know any of this.”

I nearly smiled.

Too late.

Then Emily said something I had not expected.

“She will know.”

Every voice stopped.

Richard asked:

“What did you do?”

Emily answered:

“I gave her a note.”

A chair scraped violently.

Daniel swore.

I backed away from the window.

Too late.

The basement door opened.

Daniel stepped outside.

For one second, neither of us moved.

His face changed.

“Claire?”

I stood.

He looked behind me, searching the darkness.

“What are you doing here?”

I pulled out my phone.

“Learning exactly what kind of family I almost married into.”

His eyes went cold.

Then Richard appeared behind him.

And in his hand was a folder bearing a title I recognized immediately:

PETITION FOR ADULT GUARDIANSHIP.

They were not just controlling Emily’s money.

They were preparing to take legal control of her life.
