Chapter 9 - THE SECRET THAT ERASED THE CRANE CLAIM

David Crane was not a Crane by blood.

At least not through Michael.

Margaret explained carefully.

Michael Crane adopted David privately as an infant.

Legally, David was his son.

But the old secondary trust clause used archaic language:

Issue of the body.

Biological descendants only.

Ugly wording.

Old wording.

But legally significant.

David had apparently discovered this in his twenties.

If challenged, his branch could lose any future claim.

So he began trying to alter records.

My father caught him.

That was why he fired him.

Not simply theft.

David had used company resources to access family genetic archives and old birth records.

The missing million dollars financed part of it.

“Why didn’t Dad expose him?”

Margaret sighed.

“Michael Crane begged him not to.”

Family loyalty.

Again.

Secrets preserved to protect someone in the short term.

Disaster created for everyone later.

David disappeared.

Then apparently returned through Vanessa.

His niece.

Richard’s daughter.

Biologically connected to Michael through Richard.

That mattered.

Vanessa was legitimate Crane blood.

Her child could potentially qualify for the secondary branch if my line were disqualified.

Now the scheme made sense.

Not a fake bloodline.

A real alternate one.

They needed to weaken or remove my children’s claims.

Hence the parentage challenge.

The manipulated fertility records.

The merger.

The marriage timing.

The divorce.

Grant stared at the documents.

“Vanessa used me.”

I looked at him.

“You keep saying that like it is the most important betrayal in the room.”

He closed his eyes.

“Fair.”

The court ordered independent genetic testing for the triplets only because the challenge had already been filed.

I hated every second.

Not because I doubted they were mine.

Because strangers had turned my newborn babies into evidence.

Results returned forty-eight hours later.

All three were biologically mine.

And Grant’s.

The challenge collapsed.

The Carter descendant branches became permanent.

David Crane’s strategy failed.

But Vanessa’s pregnancy remained.

Then came another result.

Her fetus was not Grant’s.

He sat in my hospital room when his attorney called.

For a moment, I thought he might cry.

Not because he had lost a child.

Because the fantasy he had traded our family for had never existed.

“Whose is it?” I asked.

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Margaret did.

Investigators had obtained emails.

Vanessa had undergone IVF using embryos created with sperm from a donor selected specifically for genetic compatibility with the Crane line.

But the donor had been mislabeled publicly.

Privately, David referred to him by initials.

R.C.

Richard Crane?

No.

Margaret read the full name.

Robert Carter.

My father’s younger cousin.

I stared at her.

“He’s seventy.”

“The sample was frozen eighteen years ago.”

Everything stopped.

The Cranes had obtained biological Carter material years earlier.

Vanessa’s child could potentially be presented as a Carter descendant.

Not through fraud alone.

Through an actual genetic connection created intentionally.

Grant whispered:

“My God.”

No.

This was not God.

This was planning.

And someone had been planning it since before my father died.
