Chapter 1 - THE FIRST MAN STOPPED LAUGHING

The heavyweight on my left moved first.
He was probably thirty, maybe thirty-two, with cauliflower ears and shoulders built from years of lifting things heavier than good judgment.
He came at me smiling.
That smile disappeared almost immediately.
I stepped away from his wild charge, redirected him, and sent him crashing shoulder-first into the padded wall.
The entire gym went silent.
The second fighter hesitated.
That hesitation told me more about him than his muscles ever could.
He had fought people who wanted to win.
He had never fought someone who simply refused to panic.
“Last chance,” I said.
Dustin laughed.
“Get him!”
The next few seconds were ugly.
Not cinematic.
Not clean.
Real violence never is.
A fist grazed my cheek. Somebody grabbed my shirt. Another man tried to rush me from behind.
I moved on instinct buried beneath fifteen years of training and another decade of trying to forget it.
One man hit the mat.
Then another.
The third stumbled backward into the cage, staring at me as though my gray beard had suddenly become a disguise.
The fourth stopped moving toward me altogether.
“Coach,” he whispered.
The tattooed man’s face had changed.
No laughter now.
Only calculation.
Dustin’s smirk disappeared too.
“You think this proves something?” he snapped.
I looked at him.
“No.”
I wiped blood from the corner of my mouth.
“My daughter being in the hospital proves something.”
Dustin stepped backward.
That was when his coach reached underneath the front desk.
I saw the movement.
“Don’t.”
He froze.
Slowly, I walked toward him.
Then I noticed something beneath the desk.
A bank of security monitors.
Eight cameras.
Every corner of the gym was being recorded.
The coach followed my eyes and suddenly looked terrified.
Not because they had captured me.
Because one monitor showed Dustin standing beside the cage two nights earlier.
And beside him was Evelyn.
She was crying.
A timestamp glowed beneath the image.
The night Dustin claimed he hadn’t seen her.
“Interesting,” I said.
Dustin went pale.
Then I noticed another man standing in the footage behind my daughter.
A man I recognized immediately.
May you like
And he wasn’t Dustin’s uncle.
He was a detective who had told us Evelyn’s bruises were a “private family matter.”
