Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE GLASS

The nurse led us through a private corridor.
I didn't understand where we were going.
Every question I asked received the same answer.
“You need to see her first.”
Finally, we stopped outside a glass observation room.
A woman sat inside.
Gray hair.
Thin shoulders.
A familiar posture.
My knees nearly gave out.
My mother looked up.
She was older.
Frailer.
But it was her.
“Mabel?”
Her voice broke something inside me.
I pushed through the door.
“Mom?”
She stood.
We stared at each other.
Then she began crying.
I ran into her arms.
For eleven years, I had mourned her.
I had kept her photographs.
I had spoken to her when I was alone.
I had blamed myself for not being there when she died.
And now she was alive.
But there was no time for a reunion.
Because my mother immediately pulled away.
“Where is your daughter?”
“She’s safe.”
My mother closed her eyes.
“Thank God.”
“What happened?”
She looked at Thomas.
Then at Phoebe.
“They've been watching you for years.”
“Who?”
“The Vance family.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandmother created the original trust.”
I froze.
“My grandmother?”
“Yes.”
My mother explained that the Vance empire had been built on a secret partnership between our families.
But decades ago, one Vance executive had attempted to steal control of the company.
My grandmother stopped him.
The price was her silence.
She created a succession clause ensuring that control could never pass entirely to one branch of the family.
Instead, the final authority would belong to the granddaughter who fulfilled one condition.
She had to become a mother.
I stared at her.
“So Lily…”
“Is the final beneficiary.”
My stomach turned.
“That's why they wanted a son.”
My mother nodded.
“Your husband knew.”
I felt sick.
“How?”
“Because his father told him.”
“And he still married me?”
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
I thought about every kiss.
Every anniversary.
Every time Flynn had told me he loved me.
I had believed it was love.
My mother reached for my hand.
“He was supposed to protect you.”
“Instead, he betrayed me.”
“No.”
She looked directly into my eyes.
“He betrayed himself.”
Phoebe suddenly looked at her phone.
“Something's wrong.”
“What?”
“The trust registry just changed.”
I stepped closer.
“Changed how?”
Phoebe's face went pale.
“Someone has activated the emergency succession clause.”
“Who?”
She looked at Lily.
“Your daughter.”
I stared at my sleeping baby through the glass.
Then every screen in the hospital hallway went black.
A single message appeared.
SUCCESSION CONFIRMED.
And beneath it:
PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: LILY VANCE.
Flynn's empire had just legally become my daughter's.
But then another line appeared.
May you like
SECONDARY BENEFICIARY: UNKNOWN.
