Chapter 3 - CHLOE HAD ALREADY CHOSEN MY OFFICE

Valerie found Chloe before Chloe found her.

She did not confront her at work.

She did not scream outside a restaurant.

She did not create the scene Gavin probably expected.

She invited Chloe to coffee.

Chloe arrived fifteen minutes late wearing a cream coat Valerie had seen hanging in Gavin’s car six months earlier.

She was thirty-one.

Blonde.

Elegant.

Nervous.

“You wanted to talk?”

Valerie placed the trademark application on the table.

Chloe’s face changed.

“Where did you get that?”

“It’s public.”

Chloe looked toward the door.

“Gavin said you were fine with this.”

Valerie almost admired the absurdity.

“With you taking my company?”

“He said you were closing it.”

“Really?”

“He said after the divorce you were moving to Oregon.”

“My mother is dead.”

Chloe went pale.

“He told me she was sick.”

“She died three years ago.”

Silence.

Something shifted.

For the first time, Valerie wondered how much Gavin had lied to Chloe too.

Not enough to make Chloe innocent.

But enough to make the picture less simple.

“Did he tell you the house is yours?”

Chloe hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Did he mention he transferred it to your LLC for ten dollars?”

“He said that was temporary.”

“Did he mention I own half the beneficial interest?”

Chloe stopped breathing.

“No.”

Valerie leaned back.

“You should probably call your own lawyer.”

“I have one.”

“Not Gavin’s.”

Chloe looked down.

That answer was enough.

Valerie continued.

“Did you know he took money from my company?”

“No.”

“Did you know he filed a trademark using your name?”

“I signed something.”

“Did you read it?”

Chloe’s cheeks reddened.

“No.”

Valerie felt an unexpected flicker of recognition.

Gavin liked signatures more than conversations.

He preferred paperwork people did not read.

Chloe whispered:

“He said Verde was a marital business and you were leaving it behind.”

“My business existed before Isabelle was born. Gavin has never worked one day there.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You knew he was married.”

Chloe looked up.

“Yes.”

Good.

At least she did not lie about that.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

“That’s convenient.”

“I’m telling you he lied to me too.”

Valerie stood.

“Being lied to does not erase what you chose.”

She walked toward the door.

Then Chloe spoke.

“He told me Isabelle isn’t his.”

Valerie stopped.

Slowly, she turned.

“What?”

“He said the paternity test was manipulated.”

Valerie almost laughed.

“By whom?”

“You.”

“He showed you the report?”

“No.”

“Of course.”

Chloe lowered her voice.

“There’s more.”

Gavin had told Chloe Valerie was emotionally unstable.

Obsessive.

Controlling.

He said she used Isabelle to punish him.

He claimed the greenhouse business was draining their finances.

He showed Chloe photographs of messes in the house and called them evidence Valerie could not care for a child.

Valerie recognized some pictures.

Toys on a rug.

Dirty dishes after Isabelle’s birthday.

Laundry on a sofa during a week Valerie had influenza.

Ordinary life turned into a case file.

“Why was he documenting me?”

Chloe looked sick.

“I thought it was for the divorce.”

“And now?”

Chloe opened her phone.

“I heard him talking to his mother.”

There was a recording.

Gavin’s voice filled the café through one earbud.

“If Valerie fights the house, we go after the trust. Once she’s declared financially reckless, Florence becomes successor trustee.”

Chloe stopped the audio.

Valerie stared at her.

“What trust?”

Chloe’s confusion appeared genuine.

“I thought you knew.”

Valerie did not.

But she knew exactly one person who might.

Evelyn.

Twenty minutes later, Valerie called.

There was silence on the line after she mentioned the recording.

Then Evelyn said:

“Your mother made me promise I wouldn’t discuss this unless Gavin tried to interfere with Isabelle’s future.”

Valerie felt cold.

“What future?”

“The trust Miriam created three years ago.”

“How much?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Today?”

“Yes.”

May you like

“Just under five million dollars.”

And Valerie was the only trustee standing between Gavin and the money.
