Chapter 7 - THE BRIDE ANTHONY REJECTED

Anthony had originally chosen Vanessa.

Vincent stared at the old document until the ink blurred.

It made sense.

Vanessa came from money.

Connections.

Old Chicago family ties.

She already loved Vincent.

A marriage between them would have been easy.

Then Anthony crossed out her name.

Inserted Claire Bennett.

Why?

Marco found Anthony’s final investigation file.

Vanessa Hale’s family had financial ties to Carlo’s branch.

Not publicly.

Through shell corporations.

Her father had helped Carlo move money decades earlier.

Anthony learned Vanessa’s family was financially connected to the very branch trying to seize control.

So he changed brides.

Not for romance.

Not prophecy.

Risk management.

Vincent laughed bitterly.

Even his marriage had been a boardroom firewall.

Then Marco found more.

Anthony did not simply choose Claire because she held Bennett rights.

He chose her because she had already rebuilt the warehouse operation at nineteen and later earned a business degree at night.

Vincent stared.

“Business degree?”

“Yes.”

“She told me she took classes.”

“She graduated.”

“When?”

“Six months before your wedding.”

Vincent had not attended.

Had he even known?

He searched memory.

Claire once left an invitation on his desk.

He assumed it was some charity event.

Never opened it.

His shame became physical.

Marco placed Anthony’s handwritten assessment before him.

Claire Bennett understands systems, loyalty, and people. Vincent understands power. If he is wise enough to respect her, they may build something better than what I leave them.

Vincent looked away.

Anthony had not merely selected Claire as a condition.

He had believed she could stand beside Vincent.

Vincent turned her into furniture.

Then Tomas regained consciousness.

Vincent visited him.

Lucia’s twenty-six-year-old son looked terrified.

“What did you mean Anthony changed the bride?”

Tomas swallowed.

“My mother found out before he died.”

“About Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

“What did Lucia do?”

“She panicked.”

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa was supposed to marry you, then help challenge the trust.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“So they planned it together.”

“At first.”

“And Claire?”

“Mom thought Claire was just Anthony’s last-minute obstacle.”

“She wasn’t.”

“No.”

Tomas looked away.

“What?”

“Mom eventually learned about Daniel Bennett.”

“And?”

“She realized if Claire ever accepted the trust fully, our branch was finished.”

“So she manipulated Salvatore.”

“Yes.”

“The medication?”

“Yes.”

Vincent’s anger turned lethal.

“Did Lucia order the bottle switch?”

Tomas hesitated.

“No.”

“Who?”

“Vanessa.”

“On her own?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you say Claire was never supposed to marry me?”

“Because Mom had another plan.”

Vincent went still.

“What plan?”

“If you refused Claire, control passed to our branch.”

“I know.”

“If you married her but she died before formally accepting Bennett rights, there was a challenge window.”

Vincent stopped breathing.

“Lucia wanted Claire dead.”

Tomas’s eyes filled.

“I think so.”

Vincent stood.

“When?”

“Not originally.”

“Then when?”

“After Claire fixed western logistics.”

Of course.

When she became valuable.

Not when she was invisible.

Tomas grabbed Vincent’s sleeve.

“Mom knows Claire is alive.”

Vincent froze.

“How?”

“She has someone inside the clinic.”

Vincent immediately called Sebastian.

No answer.

Claire.

No answer.

Ethan.

No answer.

His blood turned cold.

Then a text came from Claire’s phone.

One photograph.

Claire sitting in a car.

Eyes closed.

Head against the window.

Unknown location.

Message:

YOU SHOULD HAVE LET HER STAY DISPOSABLE.

Vincent stared.

May you like

Lucia had taken Claire.

And for the first time in three years, Vincent did not care what happened to the empire if getting his wife back required burning every part of it down.
