Chapter 1 - The Little Girl with Caldwell Eyes

Ethan Caldwell had faced armed men without flinching, but the moment Lily looked up at him, the most feared man in New York forgot how to breathe.

“Answer me, Rosa.” His voice was barely above a whisper. “How old is she?”

I tightened my arms around my daughter. “Three.”

Victoria Haynes let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh. “Ethan, she's a maid's child. You cannot seriously be suggesting—”

“Be quiet.”

Two words. That was all it took to silence the woman who had spent months planning their wedding.

Ethan crouched in front of Lily. His expression softened as he held out his hand, but Lily buried her face against my neck.

“Mommy, I didn't break the piano,” she sobbed. “I only wanted to hear the pretty song.”

Something changed in Ethan's eyes.

“I know, sweetheart. You didn't do anything wrong.”

Victoria folded her arms. “She was touching an instrument worth half a million dollars. Someone needed to teach her boundaries.”

I stood so quickly that Lily's rabbit fell to the floor.

“You pushed a three-year-old.”

“And you're a housekeeper who should remember her place.”

Ethan rose.

“Victoria, leave the room.”

Her mouth fell open. “You're defending her?”

“I'm giving you one chance to leave before I have security escort you out.”

Victoria's face flushed with humiliation. She grabbed her purse and stormed toward the door, but not before whispering something that made my blood run cold.

“You have no idea what you've brought into this house, Rosa.”

When the door closed, Ethan turned toward me.

“Please,” he said, his voice breaking. “Let me see her face.”

I reluctantly moved Lily's curls aside. Ethan stared at her gray-green eyes, then at the tiny crescent-shaped birthmark beneath her left ear.

His own fingers flew to the identical mark on his neck.

“God,” he whispered.

I stepped backward.

“Don't.”

He looked at me as if I'd struck him.

“Is Lily my daughter?”

I could have lied. I had lied for three years, convincing myself that silence was the only way to keep my child safe.

But Lily reached for Ethan's discarded keys and asked whether he would play the piano for her.

He knelt again, tears gathering in his eyes.

“Of course, sweetheart.”

Then he looked at me.

“Rosa, I need you to tell me one thing. When you disappeared four years ago, did you know my father had been murdered?”

My heart stopped.

May you like

Because I hadn't just known.

I had received a photograph of his father's body the night before I vanished.
