Chapter 13 - THE NIGHT THE MARINO EMPIRE COLLAPSED

The recovered video changed everything.
For years, Antonio Marino had controlled his family through fear.
He manipulated medical records.
Separated children.
Staged deaths.
And used a network of private companies to hide money that belonged to Isabella and her sons.
But now investigators had evidence.
Real evidence.
Video recordings.
Financial documents.
Witness statements.
Medical records.
And testimony from the people he'd tried to silence.
Daniel Parker.
Isabella Marino.
Gabriel Marino.
Dr. Bennett.
And me.
I watched the investigation unfold from the hospital, where doctors continued monitoring my recovery.
The poisoning symptoms were slowly improving.
The headaches became less frequent.
My hands stopped trembling.
And for the first time in weeks, I could sleep without waking in fear.
Matteo visited every afternoon.
Sometimes he brought flowers.
Sometimes coffee.
Sometimes nothing at all.
He simply sat beside me.
One evening, I looked at him.
“Don't you have an empire to run?”
He smiled faintly.
“Apparently, I'm busy watching a very stubborn woman recover.”
I laughed.
“I'm not stubborn.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“You argued with three doctors yesterday.”
“They were wrong about the hospital pudding.”
He smiled.
“Clearly a matter of national importance.”
I laughed again.
It felt strange.
Laughing with Matteo Marino.
The man I'd once feared more than anyone.
Now he was becoming someone I trusted.
But trust wasn't simple.
I had spent eleven months living inside a mansion where people watched me, stole my letters, and tampered with my medication.
I needed time.
Matteo seemed to understand.
He never asked me to return to work.
Never pressured me to remain in his home.
And never tried to make decisions for me.
Instead, he arranged for an independent attorney to help me review my employment rights and any claims arising from what happened.
The choice was mine.
By the end of the month, Antonio Marino faced serious criminal charges.
His financial network was dismantled under court supervision.
The fraudulent transfers were investigated.
And the assets connected to Isabella's trust were placed under independent legal review.
But for Matteo, none of that mattered as much as one phone call.
His mother was stable enough to receive visitors.
He looked at me.
“Would you come with me?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
At the rehabilitation hospital, Isabella sat beside a window.
Her dark hair had turned silver.
Her face was thinner than in the photographs.
But when Matteo entered, her eyes filled with tears.
“My boy.”
He stopped walking.
“Mom?”
She held out her arms.
He crossed the room and embraced her.
For eleven years, he'd believed she was dead.
Now she was holding him.
I turned away, crying.
Then Gabriel entered.
Isabella began sobbing.
“My baby.”
He rushed toward her.
And the family that had been stolen from each other finally began coming home.
But Isabella wasn't finished.
She turned toward me.
“Naomi.”
I stepped closer.
She took my hand.
“Your father is waiting.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
She smiled through her tears.
“In the garden.”
I turned toward the door.
And there he stood.
Older.
Thinner.
Gray-haired.
But unmistakably my father.
Daniel Parker.
Alive.

And when he saw me, he whispered:
“My little girl finally found her way home.”
