Chapter 11 - THE RING GARETH SWORE HE NEVER TOUCHED

Gareth came to Irene’s apartment only after she agreed.

He stood outside the door.

No flowers.

No family attorney.

No assumption that she would let him inside.

She opened it halfway.

“Did you give Tessa my ring?”

His face changed.

“No.”

“Who picked it up after I left?”

“I did.”

“So you had it.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Until the next morning.”

“What happened?”

“I put it in my study safe.”

Irene folded her arms.

“Who knew the combination?”

“Me.”

Then he stopped.

“Tessa.”

Of course.

He had given her access months earlier for transaction files.

Another boundary treated like a convenience.

“She took it.”

“Apparently.”

“Why leave it for me?”

“To make you believe I gave it to her.”

Irene almost laughed.

“Tessa still thinks I need more reasons to leave you?”

Gareth looked down.

“No.”

At least he knew.

The ring was processed for evidence.

Tessa had handled it recently.

But there was something else beneath the velvet insert of the box.

A microSD card.

Not Irene’s.

The files contained copies of Westward Advisory records.

Tessa had left evidence.

Why?

Because she was afraid of someone.

A video file answered.

Tessa appeared alone.

No makeup.

No champagne.

No confidence.

“If you’re watching this, Michael decided I’m expendable.”

Her brother.

The buyer’s attorney.

She explained that the plan began as revenge.

Destroy Bernard’s control.

Humiliate the Langstons.

Take a deal from them the way Bernard took Arthur Ward’s company.

But Michael wanted more.

He had expanded the plan into systematic stripping of the care facilities.

Staffing reserves.

Property separations.

Pension manipulations.

Tessa helped.

Willingly.

Then she discovered Michael intended to leave her carrying the criminal exposure while he moved money abroad.

Again, no innocence.

Only betrayal among betrayers.

She looked into the camera.

“Gareth was useful because he wanted to believe every problem had an executive solution.”

Irene could not disagree.

“And Irene was dangerous because she notices when care becomes numbers.”

The next file contained Michael’s travel plans.

Montreal.

Zurich.

Then Singapore.

But one ticket had not been used yet.

Boston.

Tonight.

Julian contacted investigators.

Michael Ward was arrested at Logan Airport before boarding his connection.

Tessa was not with him.

Then Michael made a deal.

He provided her location.

Not overseas.

Not hidden in luxury.

She was inside one of Langston’s own closed rehabilitation facilities in upstate New York.

Why there?

Because she had stored original documents inside an abandoned records room.

Investigators found her before dawn.

No chase.

No dramatic shootout.

Tessa surrendered.

As officers escorted her out, she asked for one person.

Not Gareth.

Irene.

Against Julian’s advice, Irene agreed to one supervised conversation.

Tessa sat behind glass.

“You won,” she said.

Irene stared.

“This was never a competition.”

“It was to me.”

“That sounds exhausting.”

For the first time, Tessa almost smiled.

Then she said something Irene did not expect.

“Gareth did love you.”

Irene’s expression did not change.

“That did not stop him.”

“No.”

Tessa looked down.

“That’s why I knew he could be used.”

And then she revealed the last secret of the affair.

Gareth had tried to end it three months earlier.

But Tessa threatened to expose the capacity plan he had already begun discussing with her.

He stayed.

Not because he loved Tessa more.

May you like

Because he was protecting himself.

Which, Irene realized, was somehow even less romantic.
