Chapter 8 - THE EMPIRE I CHOSE NOT TO FIGHT FOR

Three years earlier, I would have been on a plane before Marcus finished explaining.
I would have summoned captains.
Called debts.
Threatened families.
Won.
This time, I looked toward the twins’ bedroom.
“No.”
Marcus stared.
“Boss?”
“I’m not going back.”
“The council votes in forty-eight hours.”
“Let them.”
His face changed.
“You could lose everything.”
“No.”
I looked at Evelyn.
“I already did that once.”
She went still.
Marcus understood before anyone else.
“You’re surrendering leadership?”
“I’m separating the legitimate companies before Lorenzo touches them. Everything else can burn.”
That sentence would have been unthinkable a week earlier.
The Moretti organization had been my identity since I was twenty-three.
Then Sofia entered wearing pajamas covered in stars.
“Why is everybody angry?”
I crouched.
“Work problem.”
“Mama says work is not allowed to yell after bedtime.”
Evelyn covered a smile.
“I’ll remember.”
Sofia wandered away.
Marcus whispered:
“You’re serious.”
“Yes.”
We spent the next twelve hours restructuring what could legally be separated.
Hotels.
Restaurants.
Construction.
Logistics.
Clean businesses.
My attorney transferred management to independent boards.
Anything tied directly to criminal activity would not follow me.
For the first time, I looked at my empire and saw how much of it was simply fear organized into paperwork.
Lorenzo called.
“You’re hiding in Boston with a woman who divorced you.”
I almost laughed.
“She divorced me emotionally. I filed the paperwork.”
“You’re throwing away Chicago.”
“No.”
I looked at Leo sleeping on the couch.
“I’m finally deciding what isn’t worth keeping.”
Lorenzo’s voice sharpened.
“The twins won’t save you.”
“They have nothing to do with this.”
“They have everything to do with this.”
That was the confession I needed.
Marcus recorded it.
Lorenzo continued:
“You think I waited three years to let two hidden children erase my future?”
Evelyn heard.
Her face changed.
I kept him talking.
“What did you do?”
He realized too late.
The line disconnected.
The recording wasn’t enough to prove kidnapping attempts.
But it proved motive.
Nathan contacted federal authorities he trusted.
Not Chicago.
Boston.
Independent jurisdiction.
I hated involving law enforcement.
Evelyn noticed.
“Problem?”
“My entire childhood taught me police were enemies.”
“And?”
“I’m discovering my childhood taught me a lot of stupid things.”
She almost smiled.
Then Marcus got a message.
Not from Chicago.
From my mother.
She had sent one file.
An audio recording.
Lorenzo speaking with Paolo Rizzi after the daycare attempt.
RIZZI:
The girl was too close to the teacher.
LORENZO:
Then next time take both somewhere no teacher can see.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Victoria had possessed proof for fourteen months.
She could have ended this earlier.
May you like
But instead she had kept it as leverage.
Even when the leverage involved my children.
