Chapter 13 - THE ELDERLY MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Charles Whitcomb had been standing beside us since the night of the engagement party.

He had recognized my father's fighting style.

He had introduced us to Anthony's past.

He had helped explain the photographs.

And now Victoria Lane was accusing him of betraying Miguel Reyes.

I felt sick.

"Charles wouldn't do that," I whispered.

Alexander looked grim.

"We need evidence."

Investigators questioned Charles the following morning.

At first, he denied everything.

Then they showed him a recording recovered from Edward Lane's files.

Charles sat in a private office across from Edward.

The timestamp was dated four days before my father's death.

Charles handed Edward an envelope.

The label read:

MIGUEL REYES - PRIVATE ADDRESS.

I stared at the screen.

"No."

Charles covered his face.

"I didn't know what Edward planned."

Alexander's voice turned cold.

"You gave him Miguel's address."

"I thought Edward wanted to negotiate."

"After everything he'd done?"

Charles began crying.

"He threatened my granddaughter. Said he'd hurt her if I didn't cooperate."

I looked at him.

"My father had children too."

Charles couldn't meet my eyes.

For twenty years, he'd carried guilt.

But guilt didn't bring my father back.

The investigators documented his confession, and Charles agreed to testify.

He would face consequences for his role.

I left the interview room before he finished speaking.

Alexander followed me into the hallway.

"Sophia."

I kept walking.

"Sophia, please."

I stopped.

"What?"

He stood a few feet away.

"You don't have to forgive him."

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps acting like forgiveness is the final step."

"It isn't."

I looked at him.

"Then what is?"

"Living without letting what he did control the rest of your life."

Something in his voice made me look up.

For years, Alexander had been surrounded by betrayal, violence, and power struggles.

Yet somehow, he understood exactly what I needed to hear.

I wiped my tears.

"You're not what I expected."

He smiled faintly.

"Neither are you."

Three days later, Edward Lane was arrested while attempting to leave the country.

Adrian Kane agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.

Victoria surrendered through her attorney and faced charges related to financial conspiracy, intimidation, and the abduction of Daniel Ashford.

The evidence against Edward was overwhelming.

My father's death was finally being investigated as part of the larger criminal conspiracy.

And for the first time in six years, I felt something close to peace.

That evening, Alexander invited my family to dinner.

Not at an expensive restaurant.

Not at a mansion.

At a small Filipino restaurant in Queens that my father had loved.

Mateo grinned when he saw the menu.

"Dad used to bring us here!"

Alexander looked at me.

"I asked your mother."

I smiled.

"Good choice."

During dinner, Alexander pulled a small envelope from his jacket.

Inside was a scholarship agreement for Mateo's future education.

I stared at him.

"Alexander..."

"Your father saved my brother. I can't repay him. But I'd like to honor what mattered to him."

My mother began crying.

Then Alexander looked at me.

"And there's one more thing."

He placed a folded document beside my plate.

It was an employment contract.

But it wasn't for housekeeping.

The title read:

DIRECTOR OF GUEST SAFETY AND STAFF PROTECTION.

I looked up.

"What's this?"

May you like

Alexander smiled.

"An opportunity to make sure nobody working at the Ashford Grand is ever treated the way Victoria treated you."
