Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH ABOUT ETHAN

Ethan did not speak for almost a full minute.

Then he said:

“Everyone out.”

Brian hesitated.

“Boss—”

“Out.”

The attic emptied until only Ethan, my father and I remained.

Ethan stared at him.

“Who was my father?”

My father looked trapped.

“You should ask your mother.”

“She died when I was nineteen.”

“I know.”

“So answer me.”

I had never heard Ethan’s voice like that.

Not angry.

Wounded.

My father finally spoke.

“Michael Carter raised you.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

The exact sentence I had used minutes earlier.

My father swallowed.

“Your biological father was Joseph Vale.”

I knew the name.

Everyone in Chicago did.

Joseph Vale had once been a close Carter ally.

He disappeared when Ethan was four.

Rumor said he fled the country with millions.

Ethan laughed once.

“Joseph Vale?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother had an affair with him before marrying Michael.”

Ethan turned away.

His hands tightened into fists.

I suddenly understood how strange it was that both of us had grown up inside carefully manufactured family histories.

“Did Michael know?”

“Yes.”

“And he raised me anyway.”

“Yes.”

Something in Ethan softened.

Not much.

But enough.

Then I looked at my father.

“What does this have to do with Mom?”

“Michael knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That Jane wasn’t mine biologically.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You were friends.”

“For years.”

My father sat beside the dollhouse.

“Michael agreed to protect her secret. He loved both of you. He knew if Victor learned Jane was connected to the Carters by blood, he could use that.”

I frowned.

“Why would that matter?”

“Because Michael controlled territory Victor wanted.”

I looked at Ethan.

That territory eventually became his.

Suddenly our marriage seemed darker.

“Did you know any of this when you married me?”

Ethan’s answer came instantly.

“No.”

I believed him.

That frightened me more.

Because if none of us knew, then someone else had been arranging pieces for years.

My mother’s final letter contained the clue.

It read:

If Jane ever stands beside a Carter again, tell her to look at the ledger under the old name.

“What old name?” I asked.

My father went pale.

Ethan saw it.

“You know.”

He did.

“Vale.”

Joseph Vale.

Ethan’s biological father.

Brian searched the recovered files.

A hidden folder appeared under VALE.

Inside were transfer records.

Twenty-eight million dollars.

But the money had not disappeared.

It had been moved.

Into a trust.

The beneficiary was not me.

It was Ethan.

I looked at him.

He looked at me.

Our families had been connected financially before we were old enough to understand what money meant.

Then we found the date the trust would become active.

The day Ethan married.

My breath caught.

May you like

Our wedding had triggered the account.

And someone knew that before either of us did.
