Chapter 11 - THE FILE HE PREPARED AGAINST ME

Victor had not only prepared his defense.
He had prepared mine.
Or rather, the version of me he intended to present to the world.
His attorney’s discovery file contained notes gathered over eighteen months.
Sarah handles household spending impulsively.
Sarah becomes emotionally unstable during stressful medical events.
Sarah has limited understanding of financial matters.
Every statement was designed for one purpose.
To make me look incapable.
Victor had been building a story in which he managed our finances because his wife could not.
He included photographs of me crying at my mother’s funeral.
A prescription for anxiety medication from seven years earlier.
Emails where I asked him to handle taxes because I was overwhelmed with work.
Normal moments from a marriage.
Rewritten as evidence of incompetence.
Then we found a draft petition seeking emergency financial guardianship.
Never filed.
Ready.
If I challenged the property transfer after surgery, Victor planned to argue that pain medication and emotional instability made me incapable of managing assets.
My forged power of attorney would support the story.
My medical history would support the story.
His witnesses would support the story.
Rita’s notarization would support the story.
He wasn’t merely counting on me not fighting.
He had prepared to discredit me if I did.
That hurt differently.
Affairs are about desire.
Theft is about greed.
This was contempt.
Victor had spent months building legal proof that the woman who kept his life functioning was too foolish to control her own.
I sat in Daniel’s office holding the draft guardianship petition.
“I cooked for him after dialysis.”
“I know.”
“I rearranged my entire work schedule.”
“I know.”
“I learned every medication.”
Daniel said nothing.
“And he wrote that I was unstable.”
“You’re allowed to be angry.”
“I’m past angry.”
I looked at the signature line.
Victor’s attorney had never filed the document.
Why?
We asked him.
Sloan cooperated after receiving a subpoena.
His answer surprised us.
“I refused.”
Victor had wanted him to file immediately after my transplant.
Sloan told him there was no medical basis.
Victor became furious.
Then he said:
“Fine. Rita has someone else.”
Someone else.
Not the missing Dr. Prescott.
A second attorney.
Priya traced payments.
A woman named Melissa Crane.
Former probate lawyer.
Disbarred three years earlier for document fraud.
She had prepared the fake trust certificate used in the Carver sale.
She had also vanished after Rita ran.
Then federal agents searched Crane’s storage unit.
Inside they found blank notarized forms.
Copies of my identification.
Fake medical affidavits.
And one sealed envelope labeled:

IN THE EVENT SARAH BENNETT DOES NOT SURVIVE SURGERY.
Inside was a fully prepared petition transferring control of every major asset I owned to Victor.
