Chapter 8 - THE CONFESSION

The farmhouse was empty.

Her mother was gone.

No blood.

No body.

Only a single chair overturned near the back door.

Samuel searched every room.

Nothing.

Claire refused to leave.

“She wouldn't abandon me.”

“She may have escaped.”

“Or they took her.”

Samuel didn't answer.

Claire stared at the flash drive.

“Then we find Richard.”

They returned to the hotel.

Claire opened the drive.

One file appeared.

CONFESSION_FINAL.

She clicked it.

Richard's face appeared.

He was sitting in a dark room.

Older.

Tired.

But calm.

“My name is Richard Morgan.”

Claire leaned closer.

“I created Meridian Circle thirty-two years ago.”

The confession continued.

The organization had started as a group of investors.

They acquired failing businesses.

Then they discovered something more profitable.

Inheritance.

They began targeting heirs.

They manipulated marriages.

Forged signatures.

Created debt.

Manufactured mental-health claims.

Then seized control through courts.

Claire felt sick.

Richard continued.

“Your father joined us because he believed he could control the organization from within.”

“He failed.”

Claire whispered:

“No.”

Richard continued.

“Then he met your mother.”

The recording changed.

A photograph appeared.

Claire's parents.

Young.

In love.

Richard said:

“She convinced him to leave.”

“But by then, your father knew too much.”

Claire watched.

“He tried to expose me.”

“That's when I began destroying his life.”

Richard admitted to forging documents.

Bribing officials.

Manipulating medical records.

Using Mark.

Using Patricia.

Even using Claire's father's death to create the appearance of natural causes.

Claire's hands shook.

Then Richard said something unexpected.

“Mark was never supposed to inherit anything.”

Claire froze.

“His purpose was to monitor Claire.”

“But he failed.”

“He fell in love with her.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“That made him dangerous.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Mark had betrayed her.

But he had also been trapped.

The confession continued.

“Your father hid the archive inside Claire's pendant.”

“Only Claire could open it.”

“But there is a second archive.”

Claire stared.

“Where?”

Richard smiled.

“Inside Northbridge.”

The recording ended.

Samuel immediately stood.

“We go now.”

They returned to Northbridge.

The building had been damaged by fire.

But the basement survived.

Claire used her father's access code.

A hidden elevator opened.

They descended.

At the bottom was a vault.

Inside were hundreds of boxes.

Claire found the second archive.

Documents.

Recordings.

Photographs.

Everything.

But one file was missing.

Richard's confession had been only part one.

A note on the wall read:

THE FINAL COPY IS WITH THE PERSON YOU TRUST MOST.

Claire stared.

Samuel looked at her.

“Who do you trust?”

Claire thought.

Her father.

Her mother.

Mark.

Samuel.

No one.

Then she remembered the warning.

THE PERSON WHO HAS NOTHING TO GAIN.

She looked at Samuel.

“You.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

A voice answered from the doorway.

“Me.”

Claire turned.

Mark stood there.

His face was bruised.

His shirt was torn.

He looked exhausted.

Claire stared.

“What happened to you?”

“I tried to get your mother out.”

Claire froze.

“She's alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Safe.”

Mark stepped closer.

“I came to tell you the truth.”

Claire didn't move.

“You lied to me.”

“I know.”

“You used me.”

“I did.”

“You monitored me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Dad.”

“Yes.”

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“Then why should I believe you now?”

Mark looked at her.

“Because I brought you the final file.”

He placed a small envelope on the floor.

Claire opened it.

Inside was a handwritten confession.

But it wasn't Mark's.

It was Richard's.

And it contained one sentence that changed everything:

MARK BENNETT WAS NEVER MY AGENT.

Claire looked up.

Mark whispered:

“I was your father's.”

Silence.

Mark explained.

Her father had discovered Richard's plan.

He recruited Mark to protect Claire.

The marriage began as an assignment.

But somewhere along the way, Mark fell in love with her.

He kept lying because Richard threatened to kill Claire if Mark exposed himself.

Claire struggled to breathe.

“Why did you quit your job?”

“Because I was done.”

“Why did you tell your mother you were retiring?”

“To make her think I was following the plan.”

“Then why did you ask about my inheritance?”

“To see what Richard knew.”

Claire stared.

Every terrible moment suddenly had another layer.

But that didn't erase the betrayal.

Mark stepped closer.

“I know you may never forgive me.”

Claire whispered:

“You're right.”

He nodded.

“But I need you alive.”

Suddenly, the vault door slammed shut.

Richard's voice came through the speakers.

“You were always my favorite mistake, Mark.”

The lights turned red.

A timer appeared on the wall.

10:00.

Claire stared.

“What is that?”

Mark looked at the ceiling.

“Richard planted explosives.”

Samuel shouted:

“Move!”

The timer began counting down.

9:59.

9:58.

Claire grabbed the archive.

May you like

Mark grabbed her hand.

And they ran.
